Our client is seeking to engage a Senior Policy Advisor General Practice.
Location: Canberra, ACT
Contract Length: Permanent, Full time
Eligibility/Security Requirement: Applicants must be Australian Citizens
The Role
Working to the Policy Manager - General Practice and Workplace, the primary purpose of the role is to:

  • Research, prepare policy and related material, and manage projects relevant to allocated policy portfolio, provide high level advice and undertake related advocacy initiatives.
  • Work with government bodies, medical organisations, and stakeholders in the health sector.
  • Coordinate and provide secretariat support to Agency Councils and Committees
  • Undertake a range of tasks in respect of the issues managed by the team.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities for the role include:
  • Undertake and/or coordinate extensive, in-depth, and timely research and analysis of existing Agency policies and positions, as well as Australia's health system issues. Use research findings to advance Agency policy and provide advice on the options for appropriate policy outcomes.
  • Prepare Agency policy and position statements, submissions, background papers, briefing papers, and reports for Agency Committees (and or working groups) and Federal Council as required on the breadth of issues impacting GPs and General Practices. Areas of focus may include issues such as primary care reform, remuneration and funding, and regulatory compliance. Contribute policy related material for media releases, member engagement communication, speeches, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with relevant government bodies, medical organisations and stakeholders in the health sector to understand the environment and assist in positioning the Agency to take advantage of opportunities to advocate its policies.
  • Respond to written and verbal inquiries from members, the public and other organisations.
  • Communicate, advocate, and represent Agency policies and policy advice to Agency members and committees, and Agency policy to external stakeholders.
  • Represent the Agency as required at workshops, seminars, conferences, and other meetings.
  • Coordinate and provide secretariat support to Agency Councils (e.g. General practice), Committees and working groups. This includes scheduling meetings and forums, setting agendas, managing member attendance, preparing meeting papers and minutes, and undertaking follow-up action.
  • Provide guidance and support to Policy Advisers and in a mentoring capacity, oversee their work as required.
  • Contribute to the success of the team in meeting the Agency's aims and objectives and to undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of this role.
Selection Criteria
  • Extensive experience in researching and developing health policy and/or project management and/or providing input to advocacy strategies and campaigns based on health economic and research inputs.
  • Extensive experience in working with relevant Federal government bodies, medical organisations, and stakeholders in the health sector that demonstrates the ability to work with key people of influence, understand health sector issues, and to advocate policy positions.
  • Solid working knowledge of Australia's health system and current issues and medico-politics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with professional and consumer groups.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision in a small, cooperative team environment, as well as the ability to manage and prioritise a wide range of activities concurrently.
  • Excellent computer skills with a sound working knowledge of modern office systems such as Microsoft Office 365 suite of applications and records management systems.
  • Tertiary qualifications or a combination of qualifications relevant to the role
  • The duties and responsibilities of the position require the flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, which may occasionally include evenings and weekends, and may require travel interstate; this is reflected in the salary.
Remuneration and benefits:
  • Superannuation: 11%
