Your new role
The Senior Policy & Legislative Services Advisor role is to review, analyse, advise and develop policy and strategy in a range of contexts including strategic, economic, legislative, regulatory and operational. The Senior Strategic Policy & Legislative Services Advisor formulates effective legislative and statutory solutions, provides authoritative policy advice, assess and responds to emerging trends and challenges in occupational health and safety and workers compensation.
The role has an important part to play in ensuring the organisation continues its work towards actively preventing workplace injury and illness from occurring. The Senior Policy & Legislative Services Advisor will work across a broad range of subjects including occupational health and safety and workers' compensation and will work in a variety of settings including national, government and stakeholder forums.
What you'll need to succeed
- Demonstrated knowledge of OHS and/or compensation law or other relevant legislation and understanding of development of legislation and related parliamentary process
- Demonstrated experience in providing high level authoritative advice on complex legal and policy issues to senior officers, Government departments and Ministers within limited time constraints
- Advanced written communication skills including the ability to explain complex or technical issues clearly and in a way that can easily be understood by a range of audiences
- Excellent analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills with demonstrated ability to identify emerging trends and systemic issues, develop effective responses and position an organisation to take a proactive approach to addressing issues and opportunities.
- Experience in leading the development of strategic and/or legal policy gained in a Government environment
- Proven ability to consult on complex and sensitive issues within critical timeframes.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain trust and confidence with external stakeholders and to effectively influence and negotiate with such stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects through to completion, including working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders including and anticipating and managing risks.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with experience facilitating cross-organisational approaches to problem solving and a constructive approach to managing conflict.
- Ability to work without direct supervision
- Experience in improving policy capability within an organisation and developing and coaching individuals.
- Understanding of the regulatory cycle and practical application of a range of statutory tools to facilitate effective regulatory design and practice.
- Experience in occupational health and safety, workers compensation or other regulatory environments
- Understanding of the regulations writing process and drafting instructions for development of legislation.
- Understanding of Commonwealth-State relations
- A relevant tertiary qualification, such as in law, public policy, social sciences, or economics.
