AEMO at the Heart of Energy
We are the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), committed to designing and operating a sustainable energy system that delivers safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and gas. Our mission includes facilitating the transition to a net-zero energy system by 2050, working collaboratively with industry partners to achieve 100% renewable generation capability by 2025. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around Character, Commitment, and Connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant mission in the energy sector.
About the role
As our Senior Power System Engineer - Congestion Modelling, part of the WA Operations team, you will be responsible for Power System analysis, modelling, and reporting, to ensure short- to medium-term security, reliability, and resilience of the SWIS considering the rapid energy transition. This role is located in Perth.
What you will be doing
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS), with specific focus on the limitations of transmission system equipment such as thermal ratings, steady-state voltage stability, oscillatory stability, typical operation modes, and emerging challenges.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), Dispatch Engine (DE / WEMDE), Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and related systems which facilitate operation of the SWIS.
- In coordination with an existing team, develop and maintain Constraint Equations to represent Network Congestion (all relevant transmission system limitations) and help ensure the secure and reliable operation of the SWIS in operational and long-term planning horizons.
- Review and optimise the performance of Constraint Equations by undertaking event investigations, performing ongoing statistical analysis, and continuously improving Constraint Equations through process changes, developing new tools and the like.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for Network Congestion (network limitations and associated Constraint Equations) and respond to queries from external stakeholders (e.g., TNSP, Coordinator of Energy, etc.) and other AEMO teams (e.g., Real Time Operations / Control Room, Outage Planning, Reserve Capacity).
What you will bring to the role
- Qualifications in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to Power Systems analysis.
- Knowledge of electrical Power System modelling and analysis tools, such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, and Python.
- Demonstrated experience in Power System networks and operations.
- Understanding of electrical engineering principles, specifically related to electricity generation and transmission system theory, analysis, and modelling.
- Experience in negotiating the resolution of complex technical issues across stakeholders with competing objectives and a variety of commercial and reputational drivers.
In return some of our benefits to you
- Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
- Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
- Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
