Council’s City Design Group is a team of urban design professionals. We define, coordinate, and integrate urban form and public domain outcomes across city strategy, planning policy, infrastructure delivery and major projects. We are a passionate group of designers who bring a sophisticated understanding of the urban structure and three-dimensional morphology of the city to strategic and land use planning. Through collaboration with colleagues within our City Planning and Design Directorate and across Council, we guide and deliver outcomes for a more sustainable and liveable City.

About the role
This position is responsible for providing expert professional urban design advice and management for a range of projects aligned with Council’s strategic directions for the City of Parramatta and contributing to the achievements of the City Design Unit overall.
The role includes:
- Preparing and project managing Council initiated urban design studies, including design management of external consultancies
- Creating spatial frameworks, design concepts, and place-based development controls and guidelines that inform planning policy (Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and the Development Control Plan (DCP)
- Infrastructure delivery in coordination with State Government such as Metro, Light Rail and Powerhouse
- Strategic city shaping projects such as Civic Link and the Parramatta City River Strategy
- Public domain and capital works projects by other parts of Council
- Providing strategic design advice and review of precinct, planning proposals and development proposals
- Collaborating across Council to deliver holistic and coordinated outcomes for the City
- Engaging with key stakeholders and the community to inform, advocate and negotiate Council’s priorities and policy directions
About You
To be successful in this role you have the proven ability to lead and manage significant, cross-functional projects on time and on budget, managing the needs of multiple stakeholders, along with the ability to think strategically to identify and capitalise on opportunity.
You will have exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work with initiative and versatility on a wide range of matters, including advanced problem solving through innovation and collaboration.
The successful candidate should bring experience in the following:
- Demonstrated experience in the design and documentation of urban design studies, frameworks and guidelines
- Design management including multidisciplinary project coordination, stakeholder engagement and consultant contract management
- Understanding of the NSW planning system and its implications for local governments with particular knowledge of public domain and development control policy (LEP, DCP)
- Leadership in stakeholder consultation and ability to effectively advocate for high quality outcomes across different audiences
- Ability to prepare and provide clear and appropriate expert advice on urban design matters
- Effective written and graphic communication skills including use of Adobe Suite, CAD, and 3d digital modelling (ie. SketchUp)
Along with the following essential criteria:
- Tertiary qualifications in urban design, architecture or landscape architecture
- 5+ years’ experience in design practice, with a proven track record of successfully achieving project objectives

We are offering an attractive remuneration from $113,848 to $125,370 plus 11% superannuation.
