ABOUT THE ROLE
We are on looking for a Senior Editor with a passion for journalism and graphic design. You will be enthusiastic about creating engaging, creative, and impactful content. Working closely with University of Sydney Union (USU) stakeholders, you will lead a dynamic editorial team tasked with producing 7-8 high-quality printed magazines per year (released during Semesters). You will also be responsible for overseeing and driving PULP’s digital platforms and social media. Through these channels you will continue to lead the creative direction of the PULP brand and continue to grow the PULP community and audiences.
The Senior Editor will lead the editorial team’s participation in key USU events such as Welcome Fest. You will also lead the editorial team to design covetable merchandise to raise awareness, and engage students form a a wide range of degrees, courses, and backgrounds with a unique piece of creative media. You will be driven by originality and innovation.
You will ensure the smooth operation of PULP’s day-to-day activities and make sure that all editors adhere to the USU publication policy. You will work with the PULP Coordinator to develop an annual calendar and clear vision for PULP’s creative direction, during your tenure. You will be required to attend weekly meetings with the PULP Coordinator, who will support you in your role as Senior Editor.
Ideally you will have experience as a contributor to PULP or other student publications. However, this is not an essential requirement. You must have a portfolio or evidence of your own published work (editing, writing, or graphic design). You will have a keen eye for detail and a strong sense of what is newsworthy, culturally relevant, creative, and entertaining.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the production of 7-8 high-quality printed publications
- Lead the strategic direction to build the PULP brand, readership, and engagement across print and digital platforms
- Mentor and supervise the PULP editorial team
- Lead the team to plan, produce, edit, and manage PULP print and online
- Set and monitor deadlines for content delivery and publication
- Edit all PULP content for print and online
- Authorise content for Student Publication Directors’ (DSPs) approval
- Liaise with key stakeholders e.g., USU staff, USU Board Directors and USU Student Publication Directors
- Ensure administrative tasks are completed, including fact checking, grammar, printing and uploading content
- Manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Ensure budget is properly allocated and reconciled as directed by USU management
MUST HAVE
- Evidence of current USYD enrolment and active USU Membership
- Examples of published, credited content, ideally in student publications e.g. PULP and Honi Soit
- Demonstrated writing skills including strong grammatical knowledge, research, and copy-editing skills
- Demonstrated organisational and teamwork skills
- Willingness to comply with defamation and copyright law and USU policies
HOURS OF WORK
10 hours per week, 3 June 2024 – 28 June 2025

THE PAY
$28.24 per hour + 11% superannuation
