About This Opportunity
The Senior Research Coordinator (SRC) provides specialist research/technical subject matter expertise in support of MIWATCH activities at all stages of the research life-cycle. The SRC will also assist in outreach programs where possible and relevant as well as mentoring new staff MIWATCH members. This position is a part of the , within the .
Key Responsibilities:
Leads fieldwork at mine waste sites- involving organising campaigns, working with government stakeholders/clients and managing other MIWATCH staff members
Provides guidance and assists in establishing mine waste lab-based studies and provides supervision to other MIWATCH members learning new experiments.
Assists and/or instructs others on the application of advanced or specialist or technical research skills or processes, including
column leach testing and data interpretation
Has the ability to coordinates one of MIWATCH’s major field sampling campaigns across Australia
Undertakes maintenance and upkeep of facilities and equipment- as well as ensuring other MIWATCH members also adhere to the same protocols
Safety
Correctly prepares, and peer reviews, risk assessments for field and lab work.
Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies and protocols
Ensures the appropriate storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, equipment, stores and/or samples/specimens
Research Support
Assists with drafting research documentation, including ethics and funding applications
Undertakes literature searches and reviews
Assists with routine team administration
Assists with preparing papers, reports, graphs, figures and presentations on research outcomes at different stages of the research cycle outcomes
Presents at national forums, meetings and conferences (as permitted by funding)
Leadership and Management
Undertakes supervisory duties in accordance with 'Supervisor' level requirements and the UQ Leadership framework
Supports and/or lead the development of more junior research scientists, and technicians
Other duties, as reasonable directed by the supervisor
This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 1 year.
At HEW level 6, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $86,371.95 - $92,658.90, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $101,055.18 - $108,410.91 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
About You
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Senior Research Coordinator to apply their subject matter expertise and advanced knowledge of mine waste characterisation to the MIWATCH national mine waste sampling program and development of data management systems with a range of national and international partners.
Selection Criteria
Completion of a relevant degree in environmental geoscience with subsequent experience in coordinating activities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Demonstrated research-relevant knowledge and skills with expertise in a wide range of specialist and general research techniques, including mine waste sampling, data interpretation and data management
Expertise in the application of data evaluation for the identification of critical metal resources in mine waste
Advanced knowledge of data management
Significant experience of working in mine waste and team environments
Advanced technical capabilities in acid base accounting analysis, chemical and mineralogy data handling
Detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures for major areas of research and scientific safety such as waste disposal, labelling and risk assessment
Well-developed problem-solving skills, with an ability to forward plan, prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work with a high level of adaptability, both independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct documentation
The ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in a research environment
An avid interest in developing more junior research staff is desirable
