Job Description

The Griffith Criminology Institute (GCI) is a large, diverse, and high-performing group of scholars focused on crime and justice issues. Through collaboration and innovation our research is helping find solutions to universal problems. GCI is a world leader in the criminology field and has twice achieved the highest possible ranking for research quality in the Australian Research Council Excellence in Research Assessments. Our research is distinctive in its focus on rigorous scholarship coupled with engaged translation, to achieve real world change.

GCI is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Research Development Officer. The SRDO plays a pivotal role within the Institute, working with researchers to stimulate future research growth and sustainability in criminology, policing and security, prevention, justice, and corrections. This position presents a fantastic opportunity to work in a varied role for one of the largest and most productive criminology research communities in the world.

Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • facilitating and supporting all Research Development activities for the Institute and helping to create a vibrant research culture;
  • growing the amount and sources of research income;
  • helping identify, foster and develop research talent, including among PhD students;
  • managing internal peer review processes for external competitive grant applications and meeting with members to maintain a pipeline of applicants, identify suitable funding opportunities, help develop track record and advise potential applicants;
  • communicating GCI’s research both internally within Griffith through the provision of support for identifying and writing nominations for internal recognition for academics and externally through the provision of support for applications for prestigious awards and fellowships and helping shape research translation platforms;
  • supporting the Institute in other professional and administrative capacities as directed by the Institute Director.

What we can offer
This is a fixed term (until 30 June 2027), full-time position and will be primarily based at the Griffith University Mt Gravatt campus. A part-time appointment (0.8FTE) may also be considered. As Griffith is a multi-campus University you may be required to work across other campus locations. Griffith University’s campuses are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range
The full-time equivalent base salary will be HEW Level 8 in the range $108,764 - $122,356 per annum, plus 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $127,254 - $143,157 per annum.

About you
The successful candidate will hold a tertiary degree and relevant experience in Research Development, or an equivalent alternative combination of relevant knowledge training and/or extensive experience in academia, industry or government, preferably in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

You will also demonstrate:

  • The ability to identify, conceptualise and develop successful grant applications.
  • Knowledge of international and national research policy environments, granting scheme rules and current issues and emerging trends in the higher education research sector.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving and Research Development skills, combined with an ability to work under broad direction, self-start and to work independently in a team environment.
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation and relationship management skills including the ability to liaise with academic staff and colleagues at all levels.

A high degree of awareness of the criminology research environment, good understanding of commercial research and consultancy work, strategic knowledge of the broader Australian research environment, and familiarity with philanthropic funding pitches would be desirable.
