John Hunter Children’s Hospital (JHCH) is part of The Children, Young People and Families Directorate of Hunter New England Local Health District. It is one of three tertiary Children’s Hospitals in NSW, the only one situated outside of a capital city.
About the job:
- This position will work within the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Social Work service. This team is passionate about improving the health and psychosocial outcomes for Children, Young People and their Families. This is a collaborative team within a supportive learning and development culture.
- In this role you will work across the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). This will involve working with families in states of crisis, grief, hope and adjustment. This role will be undertaking crisis psychosocial assessments with some situations requiring longer-term intervention and psychological support to patients and their families.
- You will provide Social Work leadership to the Clinical Teams to help ensure families have a good understanding of what is happening from a medical perspective.
- This role will work alongside other NICU Social Workers as well as other Social Workers working within the Intensive Care Unit and the Children’s Hospital.
- In this role you will be supported through an orientation period. There will be opportunities for relevant ongoing professional education and development. This role will receive both professional supervision and line management support.

Requirements:
Our successful candidate will possess the following:
- Tertiary qualifications in Social Work and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
- Actively participate in the Social Work After Hours On Call roster providing crisis response across John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
- Passion for supporting families in times of crisis, trauma and end of life.
- Willingness to support families using grief and loss models of care in end-of-life care situations.
- Open to learning and innovation in clinical practice.
Additional information:
- An eligibility list will be created for future permanent part time and temporary part time vacancies.
- This position is part time over 4 days. There is a requirement that the candidate work Thursdays and Fridays but there is flexibility on what the other two days of the week are.
