About Us:

We are a passionate organisation, connected in our shared goal to be ‘sector leading’ in all that we do for the community and each other. Home to over 100,000 residents, Bayside City Council's enduring purpose is building extraordinary places, thriving communities, and better futures.

Bayside Council is an equal-opportunity employer committed to providing an accessible and safe working environment that embraces and values child safety, diversity, and inclusion. Our organisational strategy is made up of three priorities and we consider these in everything we do: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Customer Experience and Results Matter.

We want everyone to be as proud of what we are achieving – and excited about our future – as we are, and we are committed to working together to achieve this.

About the Role:

An opportunity has opened to join the Strategic Planning Team at Bayside City Council. We are looking for a Senior Strategic Planner and a Strategic Planner to join our Strategic Planning team in either a Band 6 or Band 7 capacity (dependent on skills and experience).

Reporting to the Strategic Planning Coordinator, you will use your creative urban thinking and land use planning policy expertise to contribute and lead the development and implementation of strategies, policies and structure plans to guide the future of the built environment in Bayside. As a senior member of the team, you will use your relevant qualifications, demonstrated abilities and experience to manage end to end projects and a project team. You will collaborate cross functionally, and support and mentor junior staff through active sharing of knowledge and by harnessing talents and strengths to deliver exceptional outcomes.

You will be responsible for leading Council’s advocacy and Strategic involvement in the Precinct Structure Planning process that is being set by the State government for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) precinct in Cheltenham.

The SRL is a major transport infrastructure project which seeks to provide more than 36,500 jobs and significantly increase population in the area up to 52,500 people by 2056. It is important that the successful candidate is a high performing and multidisciplinary planner that has a strong strategic mindset to help coordinate Council’s continued involvement and advocacy in this State government led project.

With the recent announcements of the State Government’s Housing Targets, and the upcoming release of the draft Plan for Victoria, Council is seeking a passionate and highly knowledgeable Strategic Planner whom will work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders regarding the shaping of policy and planning controls to appropriately respond to these major State government announcements.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to the implementation of Council's Affordable Housing Strategy and Urban Forest Strategy as well as involvement in the Activity Centre Program Review for Hampton East / Moorabbin, which is another State government initiative that is occurring in Bayside.

Key Selection Criteria:

To be successful in this role, you will bring the following skills and competencies:

  • Comprehensive understanding of urban planning principles and processes.
  • Proven skills and experience in policy and strategy development.
  • Outstanding Project management skills.
  • Strong and effective communication skills are required as well as the ability to build influence.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to conduct community engagement and translate community ideas into plans and strategies.

Mandatory pre-employment requirements:

  • Be willing to undergo and complete a satisfactory criminal history check.
  • Provide or obtain an employment-based Working with Children check.
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence.

What we can offer you in return:

You will be joining a diverse and inclusive culture, where you will have access to career development opportunities, as well as a range of employee benefits including, but not limited to:

  • A work life/balance through flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
  • Generous leave provisions, including accrued time off, parental leave, three days of wellbeing leave per year, cultural and ceremonial leave, gender affirmation leave, plus the ability to purchase up to four weeks additional leave per year.
  • Dedicated Staff Wellbeing programs, events and gym membership discounts.
  • Learning and development opportunities so our people can grow and thrive.
  • A Parkland surrounded office that is only short 500m stroll to the beach.
  • Free onsite staff parking plus hybrid vehicles that employees can book for work related travel.
  • A Green Money program, that rewards our staff for taking simple everyday steps to a more substantiable and climate aware living.

If you are ready to be part of our incredible organisation, and you think this role is the right fit for you, then we look forward to finding out more about you and what you would bring to this role.
