Our client is a leading Central Melbourne Council.
We are looking for Senior Sustainability Officer to focus on developing and delivering projects and programs to mobilise the community and rapidly accelerate community climate action.
This includes communications and engagement programs and other partnership activities.
Your new role
- Lead Council's programs to mobilise the community to take climate action and work towards net-zero community emissions, as set out in the Climate Emergency Response Strategy 2021-2025
- Collaborate with colleagues (or co-lead as agreed) to deliver initiatives that help the community to prepare and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
- Lead the strategic direction, design, development and delivery of community mobilisation and engagement programs, including capacity building programs, community events and a range of communications initiatives.
- Investigate, research and identify community segments to understand needs, motivators and barriers to action to inform the design of programs and interventions
- Contribute subject matter expertise to policy, strategy and program development
- Contribute to the Council's climate emergency advocacy and submissions to government through providing advice (and reflecting the Council's policy positions) relevant to community climate action.
- Develop relationships and foster collaboration with relevant local councils, regional and state bodies and networks
- Manage contractors, and coordinate input from other staff to implement projects.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with a wide range of community stakeholders, including community organisations, schools, and community groups and establish administrative processes to maintain regular communication.
What you'll need to succeed
- Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, sustainability, community development, communications, project management or other related discipline or lesser formal qualifications with substantial relevant experience
- Strong understanding of the roles and responsibilities of local government in acting on climate change, and the strategic context that the council operates within
- Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability or community resilience, and experience with innovative approaches to action in an urban setting, particularly homes and schools.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement community engagement, education and communication and campaigns, including producing online, social and video content.
- Strong research, analytical and report writing skills. Strong ability to manage budgets, including tracking expenditure on a project or program basis.
