ABOUT THE ROLE

Strive Community Care provides therapeutic home environments for children and young people with histories of complex trauma, abuse and neglect. We utilise a strong Therapeutic Framework and unique CREATE Model of Care with a focus on establishing holistic safety. Children and young people are provided with a sense of family, support to heal, opportunity to positively connect with others, and rebuild their lives.

We are now looking for a Senior Therapeutic Care Worker in the Ipswich Region to play a key role in supporting children and young persons in their healing journey through providing care in therapeutic homes. This is a Part-Time Role working up to full-time hours.

These positions are required to work across 24/7 rotating rostered shifts, including sleepovers, weekends, and public holidays.

Duties of the successful applicant include:

  • Assisting the Therapeutic Program Manager with managerial administration tasks as required (up to 10 hours per week with the remainder spent on the floor)
  • Build and promote a positive and caring environment that supports the children/young people residing in our homes.
  • Form and maintain professional, nurturing relationships with children and young people by building trust through visible interest and active engagement
  • Maintain safety through effectively implementing Behaviour Support Plans and Individual Crisis Management Plans.
  • Work with young people in a manner informed by attachment and trauma-informed care in line with our unique CREATE Model of Care.
  • Ensure all essential needs are met for the young person within the home such as providing a balanced diet, prompts with hygiene, support for school engagement, and creating positive life experiences.
  • Promote independent living skills including assistance with cooking, meal planning, budgeting, shopping, and maintaining a house and other daily living requirements.
  • Demonstrate an empathic understanding of complex trauma, incorporating this understanding into everyday interactions, as well as responding to pain-based behaviour in a sensitive and non-punitive way.
  • Mentor and coach children/young people to assist them to achieve their goals through the Strive Mentoring Program.
  • Act as an appropriate adult role model, seeking to engage young people in purposeful activities aimed at developing life skills and self-worth
  • Assist and support children/young people to develop links and build their capacity to be part of their community.
  • Willingness to share the management on-call roster.
  • Willingness to Act in the Therapeutic Care Manager role when requested.

  • A genuine interest in children and young people and their well-being.
  • The successful applicant will be required to work shifts as rostered, including morning, afternoon, active nights, sleepovers,and on weekends and public holidays. 
  • A sound understanding of trauma and Therapeutic Care principles.
  • Ideally have experience working in the welfare/community service sector with young people, preferably in residential care.
  • Sound knowledge of the Child Protection Act 1999 (QLD) or Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 (NSW).
  • Sound understanding of the Charter of Rights for children in OOHC.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of people for children / young persons.
  • The physical demands of the position are anything up to and including:
    • The ability to engage in physical intervention as outlined in Positive Behaviour Support Plans and ‘Physical Intervention: Disengagement to holding’ techniques as per internal training.
    • Prolonged standing and walking (between 75% to 100% of a shift).
    • Sitting for prolonged periods (up to 2 hours).
    • Stair climbing.
    • Repetitive and/or sustained squatting.
    • Repetitive slight stooping and twisting of the trunk when sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
    • Occasional lifting, pushing and pulling 5-10kg in furniture movement.
    • Repetitive reaching and sustained gripping in wiping benches, fridges, ovens.
