This is your opportunity to be part of the Technical Publications Section producing quality guides and publications in plain English to assist the aviation community in understanding (and thus complying with) the aviation regulations. The role of Senior Writer/Editor, Technical Publications is based in Canberra within the Communications Branch of the Stakeholder Engagement Division.
The Communications Branch is responsible for CASA's communication activities. This includes broad public and industry consultation and communication strategies, media engagement, website and intranet management, social media channels, safety promotion activities, graphic design, video production, sponsorships and event management, and development of plain English guides.
The key duties of the position include
The Senior Writer/Editor, Technical Publications is responsible for the following deliverables, which represent an ongoing body of work:
• under limited direction, scoping and developing plain English guides explaining complex aviation rules in a simple, easy-to-read writing style
• editing, peer reviewing and quality checking content produced by other team members to ensure a high-quality end product
• ensuring written content retains the intent of the regulations and aligns with the current Australian Government Style Manual and current accessibility requirements
• supporting and maintaining procedures associated with the role to improve the overall quality and impact of new and existing documents
• liaising with internal stakeholders and industry members (as applicable) to ensure documentation meets user needs and intended business outcomes
• maintaining and promoting guidance material including safety information, education and training materials, advisory circulars, web-based information and other media as required
• other duties as required.
You will need to:
• attain, maintain and apply your knowledge of the Civil Aviation Act 1988, Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998, Civil Aviation Regulations 1988, and associated standards policy and practice, CASA decision-making processes and agency guidelines and regulations
• build and maintain effective relationships in Canberra internally within the Communications branch and with other business units within CASA such as National Operations Standards Division and the Legal, International and Regulatory Affairs Division, as well as externally with contractors and other suppliers
• be responsible for planning own work goals and priorities that align with and achieve both own and team outcomes, exercising good judgement to deliver quality work requiring little revision before finalisation of the given stage of document development.
• work collaboratively with other team members to ensure team objectives are met, assisting in planning and managing projects and meeting agreed timelines
• promote workplace safety, equity and diversity, participative management and environmental management in the workplace in accordance with CASA values and behaviours
• work supportively and cooperatively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve shared outcomes.
Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidate must:
• have familiarity with the regulatory aspects of the aviation industry, preferably with a strong knowledge of at least one sector (such as flying operations or airworthiness)
• be able to interpret a range of document types to bring technical information together in meaningful content for the specified user. Documents may include:
o regulations and manuals of standards
o approved means of compliance / guidance material
o instructional material, training material, fact sheets
o advisory circulars
o compliance matrices, roadmaps or transitional diagrams
o research findings and analytics
o technical briefs and legal documents
• be able to develop and structure large documents considering the nature of the technical content and the knowledge of the reader
• have excellent command of written English, be familiar with writing to a style guide, have at least intermediate word skills and have meticulous attention to detail
• have a proven ability to work with minimal assistance, taking ownership of tasks and guiding/supporting others in the team as required
• have suitable people skills to develop new relationships between the section and other areas of CASA
• have strong organisational skills and the ability to contribute to continuous improvement of the product and the processes within the section
• be able to demonstrate and exercise both initiative and judgment in the provision of accurate technical knowledge and advice in a specialist discipline (relevant to your role), achieved through the exposure to CASA's policies and procedures
• be able to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in a sensitive, respectful and equitable manner
• promote workplace safety, equity and diversity, and act in accordance with the CASA values and behaviours.
