Who we are
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The Division contributes to Australia's national Antarctic interests through science, environmental management and international engagement, including delivering Australia's scientific research and operations in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. It does this by delivering the Australian Antarctic Strategy and 20 year Action Plan and the following priorities:
  • Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it.
  • Protect the Antarctic environment.
  • Understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system.
  • Undertake scientific work of practical, economic, and national significance.

To achieve these outcomes the Division leads, coordinates and delivers Australian Antarctic Program, providing policy, science, operational and support functions for 4 permanent research stations in Antarctica and on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. We provide innovative and expert advice to the Australian Government grounded in evidence and science. We work collaboratively and in partnership with First Nations Peoples, communities, regions, industry, states and territories, other government departments and international partners to achieve our outcomes.
The Assets and Technology Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the Australian Antarctic Program. Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects, including on our Antarctic and Southern Ocean bases, in support of Antarctic Program outcomes.
We have staff with diverse skills, located primarily in Tasmania, in Antarctica and on Macquarie Island. We are committed to keep our people safe and continue to deliver on the outcomes of the Independent Review of Workplace Culture and Change at the Australian Antarctic Division. We are updating our systems, processes and procedures to ensure that they support a positive culture and are fit for purpose.
The Job
As the Branch Head for the Assets and Technology Branch, you will work as part of the Antarctic Division's executive team to advance Australia's national Antarctic interests through the Antarctic Treaty system. You will be responsible for:
  • Leading in a manner that is consistent with the Secretaries Charter of Leadership Behaviours (be Dynamic, be Respectful, have Integrity, Value others and Empower people).
  • Delivering Assets and Technology projects in support of the Australian Antarctic Program.
  • Managing a large budget, including capital investments, and delivering and managing significant projects and procurements.
  • Working across Government, the Antarctic Science community and with Antarctic Programs in other countries to deliver strong outcomes and shape policy advice and negotiate outcomes for the program.

  • Managing a diverse and geographically remote and disperse workforce to be inclusive, respectful and positive.
  • Managing and leading the Division consistent with Work Health and Safety responsibilities and obligations, and the department's workplace behaviours policy.
  • Promoting a high-performance culture, whilst focusing on continuous improvement of employee and organisational performance and continuous communication.
  • Promoting integrity practices by displaying a high level of ethical behaviour in accordance with the APS Code of Conduct, APS Values and APS Employment Principles.

What we are looking for
To be successful for this role you will need to meet the Senior Executive Service capability for the SES Band 1 level, and you will have the following:

Eligibility and other requirements
Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Security Clearance - This position requires a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level for this role.
Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
Requirement to be vaccinated under public health orders
It may be a condition of your employment that:
1. if you are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 under an applicable Australian law; or
2. if the department is unable under an applicable Australian law to permit you to attend for work (ie outside of your usual place of residence) unless you are vaccinated against COVID-19.
You must be up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations, and you must also comply with all recommendations from public health authorities regarding any additional vaccinations that ensure the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine that you have received.

Work Health and Safety Obligations

An Officer (EL2-Secretary) makes and participates in making decisions that affect the whole or a substantial part of the department. Employees at the SES Band 2 and above classification are considered to be Officers under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) with all EL 2 and above required to complete officer due diligence training. Officers have a duty to be proactive and continuously ensure that the department complies with relevant duties and obligations.
