About the role:
The Pre-Qualification Mental HealthSocial Worker (PQMHSW) reports directly to the team manager within the relevant allied health team. The PQMHSW assists health professionals to deliver client centred services within GV Health, works under the direction of health professionals and are integral to the delivery of services within GV Health. The PQMHSW works with the relevant discipline for their undergraduate study in a discipline specific or multidisciplinary team and is supported to further develop relevant skills as part of their professional development as a student. The PQMHSW may also work with other allied health disciplines by mutual agreement. The PQMHSW will work with clients in the acute, subacute, outpatient and/or community services and participate under the guidance of an AHP in individual and group therapies. The role involves completing a variety of direct and indirect clinical and administrative tasks.
Strategic objective:
- Provide opportunities for Goulburn Valley Health to develop and implement entry level career strategies and workforce models to meet workforce supply requirements for allied health within a multi-disciplinary model of care.
- Provide high quality care.
- Support employment in Mental Health and wellbeing programs that enables emergent workforces to gain exposure to and develop an interest in Mental Health as a career option.
- Provide a paid opportunity for students to gain skills and contribute to engagement with consumers and families and carers.
The PQMHSW works as an assistant to the health care team, assisting the respective discipline to provide delegated aspects of consumer care.
The PQMHSW is always required to work under the direction and supervision of the line manager and/or a discipline specific delegate, within their level of education and assessed competencies and under clearly defined role parameters.
Elements of direct and indirect consumer care will be delegated in accordance with the professional judgement of the supervising clinician and in accordance with the level of achieved educational preparation and assessed competence of the individual prequalified Mental Health employee.
The prequalified Mental Health employee will be allocated to a specific ward/unit/community program and will work in accordance with the specific wared/unit/community program duty list.
The PQMHSW position will be offered to undergraduate students who have completed their first placement. The undergraduate program seeks to build the capacity of Goulburn Valley Health to attract a soon to be qualified workforce to choose a career in Mental Health. The role also provides an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the lives of consumers with a mental illness, their families and carers.
The successful applicant will have:
- Current enrolment in a relevant Social Work degree and eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) as a student member
- Have completed first placement
- Demonstrated well developed time management and problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Sound interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with other staff, patients and families
- Ability to work independently within scope of practice under the supervision of the allied health professional.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to follow instructions, take direction and feedback from health professionals.
- Have a commitment to acute/community Mental Health for people with serious Mental Health issues
