About the Role:

An exciting opportunity is presented to work within the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network as a Social Worker within the Forensic Mental Health Unit.

Ashton House provides a range of recovery orientated and treatment services, therapy and educative programs to forensic consumers during the period of transition from a secure inpatient setting and the community, or those consumers in the community requiring an intervention to reduce risk of a readmission to a secure unit. Ashton House works closely with the inpatient treating team, community Mental Health services and other community systems of support and care and across the justice system. The unit offers clinical case assessment and management, rehabilitation and preventative intervention services to consumers who are found Not Guilty By Reason of Mental Impairment under s269 of the Criminal Law Consolidation (Mental Impairment) Amendment Act 1995. 

The Forensic Social Worker works within a multi-disciplinary team towards providing skilled, evidence based social work and counselling services to consumers in the unit, their families and carers. The aim of the intervention is to facilitate recovery, improve social functioning and affect a positive return to the community.

These aims are achieved through the provision of skilled social work services, which may include bio-psycho-social assessment and problem solving, counselling support, crisis intervention, advocacy, discharge planning, networking, education, knowledge of the legal processes pertaining to the forensic environment, resource development, evaluation and research.

The Forensic Social Worker is accountable to the Team Leader of Ashton House for the provision assessment and treatment services for consumers of Ashton House which aims to optimise health outcomes.

The Forensic Social Worker applies clinical experience, increasing clinical knowledge and professional competence to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive and integrated services to the needs of clients of NALHN. The Forensic Social Worker works under limited direct clinical supervision and may provide direction and support to less experienced staff, community rehabilitation workers and students.

The Forensic Social Worker works collaboratively with the Allied Health multi-disciplinary team and liaises directly with medical, nursing staff of NALHN and with other community agencies.

Educational/Vocational Qualifications

  • Relevant undergraduate or post-graduate qualifications, (other than base-grade qualification) specific to clinical practice.

Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check.

  • National Police Certificate (NPC) for employment involving unsupervised contact with vulnerable groups required for this position (E.g. aged care employment or work involving vulnerable clients)

Immunisation Risk for this position is –  Category A (direct contact with blood or body substances)
