Social Worker (Mental Health Accredited) – General Practice

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate accredited Mental HealthSocial Worker to join our teams across two General Practice clinics in Townsville.

Background:

In 2021-22, researchers from James Cook University developed a curriculum to place 6 social work students in North QLD General Practices for their social work placements.  This pilot research showed great potential of social work integration with General Practice, however, it presented learnings about the uniqueness of the GP setting for social work and the greater potential of pairing experienced Social Workers with placement students in GP clinics.  Following on from this, a subsequent expansion project has been developed to deliver social work services to patients in GP clinics whilst also supervising placement students.

• Work in leading General Practices with skilled and diverse team of GPs.
• Contribute to research and social work practice improvement.
• Access to the student GP preparatory curriculum to support induction into the GP clinic.
• Subsidy for external individual supervision/professional development to assist with professional growth.
• Group supervision with other GP Social Workers in the project.
• Working with a diverse patient base with varying needs and requirements across two GP clinics.

Mental Health Social work key responsibilities & duties:

• Undertake psychosocial assessments with a range of patient groups to determine patient needs.
• Conduct individual therapy sessions with a broad range of clients.
• Deliver evidence-based social work interventions in response to identified issues including information and referral, advocacy, facilitating meetings with family, community resources and health professionals.
• Provide supervision to social work students on placement.
• Support GP clinic staff with elements of care plans, Mental Health care plans and other relevant assessments as required.
• Maintain a commitment to upholding AASW (2020,2023) Social work code of ethics and practice standards at all times.
• Participate in data collection to evaluate social work in GP settings.

Essential Requirements:

• Full membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) with Mental Health credentials (AMHSW).
• Eligibility to provide services under the Medicare Benefits Scheme
• Valid Working with Children check. 
• Possess strong clinical skills and experience in evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
• Provide a client-cantered approach with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable:

• Mental HealthSocial Worker Experience in a medical or allied health setting
• Experience in providing supervision to social work students on placement
• Experience with My Aged Care and/or NDIS
