Seeking a Speech Pathologist to join The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) providing holistic primary health care to the individuals and families within the remote communities in the Pilbara region. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals encouraged to apply!
PAMS aims to improve the standard of health of the Martu people and all Aboriginal people living in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia through the provision of community based, comprehensive primary health care services.
The Speech Pathologist reports to and is directly accountable to the Community Health Programs Manager. Working in collaboration with the Occupational Pathologist, the team delivers an education focused health program known as the Jiji Program to the Martu people of the four remote Aboriginal communities of Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji. You will be responsible for promoting positive speech outcomes for children and their families/carers through individual and group interventions. The Jiji Program is primarily based in schools providing teachers with training and techniques to assist learning, however can also occur in other family settings auch as painting centres, camping and outdoor activities. You will support and implement culturally appropriate professional development workshops, programs for individual children and classes and the training of school staff to enhance relationships between the school, community and external health service providers whilst incorporating techniques to ensure cultural complexities are responded to during delivery of services to Martu communities. You will also liaise with Curtin University and Edith Cowan University to establish annual program of student placements.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Speech Pathology or equivalent tertiary qualifications and eligibility for full membership of Speech Pathology Australia
- Meet the requirements of the Speech Pathology Australia Professional Self-Regulation Program
- At least 5 years post graduate experience in Speech Pathology, demonstrating a sound professional competency in service delivery, management and coordination
- Strong understanding and a commitment to the principles of Community Development
- Understanding of the principles of the model of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
- A demonstrated understanding of the unique issues affecting and impacting on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- An ability to work, reside and travel independently in a remote region.
