Location Profile

St Albans East Primary School caters for a culturally diverse student population and is located in a well-established residential area of St Albans in the City of Brimbank. At the 2020 census, school enrolment was 429 students. The school currently comprises of 18 classes; the average number of students per class is 23 across the school. The school has a combination of straight and composite classrooms. The SFO (Student Family Occupation) is 0.75 and LBOTE 68.9%.

St Albans East Primary School staff comprises of 31.8 EFT teaching staff made up of Classroom Teachers, Teachers of the Deaf, 4 Learning Specialists, 1 Leading Teacher, Principal and two Assistant Principal. There are 8.25 EFT Education Support Staff comprising of Office Administration, Integration Aides and Auslan Interpreters. The school has the services of a Psychologist and Speech Therapist through the Region, but also employs an additional full time Speech Therapist from within the school budget to support the Deaf students and the large number of students on the Language Support Program.

St Albans East Primary School hosts the Primary Deaf Facility in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne that caters for the specific learning needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  There are currently 7 students enrolled. The current staffing profile comprises of four Teachers of the Deaf (1.6.0 EFT) and two trained Auslan interpreters (1.2 EFT).  To support our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, we teach Auslan as the Language other than English.

The school offers a comprehensive curriculum program based on Vic Curriculum and has been focusing on implementing the High Impact Teaching Strategies across the school. In addition to this we offer the following specialist programs – Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, STEM, LOTE (Auslan), Literacy Support , Bridges and Fountas & Pinnell Levelled Literacy Intervention).  The school also offers Language Support Program, Interschool Sport, Excursion & Camping Program, PMP, P – 6 Swimming, Life Education, Vietnamese Dance Group, Library and Clubs.

We have a strong commitment to the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy and this will remain a priority for the school.

The completion of the Permanent Modular School Buildings Project in 2020 has allowed the school to be rebuilt consisting of two new learning centres, administration building, Deaf and Allied Health Hub.

Selection Criteria

KSC 1.  Development and delivery of a comprehensive speech pathology service and a capacity to work across all areas of the school with students who have but are not limited to language, literacy and articulation concerns.

KSC 2.  Development and delivery of a comprehensive speech pathology service and a capacity to work across all areas of the school with deaf and hard of hearing students.

KSC 3.  A sound knowledge of speech pathology techniques and the ability to develop, provide and evaluate speech pathology services and provide speech advice on appropriate intervention strategies.  

KSC 4.  Demonstrated ability to administer appropriate language assessment and provide advice to staff and families on program delivery and follow up. 

KSC 5.  Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of professionals, teachers and parents on service delivery and student based issues.

Role

The Speech Pathologist provides high level support, addressing the speech therapy needs of individuals and groups of students.  The Speech Pathologist works closely with the Student Wellbeing Team, led by the Assistant Principal (Student Inclusion and Wellbeing).  The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate evidence of an appropriate Speech Pathologist qualification.  

The Speech Therapist is required to:

  • Provide friendly and helpful assistance to students, their families and staff
  • Prioritise and manage work demands
  • Communicate effectively with a range of people
  • Report to, and provide advice and recommendations to senior management on relevant matters
  • Resolve complex enquiries relating to the work area

An Education Support position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Assessing students¿ language proficiency and preparing professional reports to support funding submissions and referral to external agencies. 
  • Coordinating language testing for students enrolling at the school who have an identified need in speech
  • Leading the Language Support Program (small group withdrawal program for students with diagnosed speech issues. This includes:
    - preparation of curriculum materials
    - preparation of formal reports for parent / teacher interviews
    - training and mentoring Education Staff and Allied Health Assistance in the delivery of the program.
  • Contributing to the evaluation of the current Language Support program using evidence-based measures
  • Providing therapy to individual students or small groups of students as required
  • Providing high level advice in the area of expertise to the Principal Class and school level personnel as required
  • Contributing to the collaborative work and functioning of the school wellbeing team; attending meetings as required, and providing leadership in initiating service improvement
  • Performing other duties appropriate to the classification as requested to assist in the effective delivery of services
  • Maintaining detailed notes and records relevant to the program.
  • Being an active member of the staff team.
