School profile

Warrnambool College is a Year 7-12 secondary school situated within parkland in the eastern area of the city of Warrnambool. Students from the City of Warrnambool and the surrounding rural districts attend the school which has a stable student population of more than 1200 students with boys and girls in approximately equal numbers. Our staffing profile of approximately 150 members includes 3 Assistant Principals, 20 Leading Teachers, teaching and education support staff, wellbeing team members and a separate reengagement staffing complement.

Student Welfare:

Warrnambool College has a student welfare structure which is based upon the organisation of students into six House Groupings. Each House has a House Leader supported by two Assistants. There is a strong focus on Pastoral Care. Our College Wellbeing centre encompasses our Wellbeing coordinator, Student Counsellors, `Big Life¿ program coordinator, School Nurse and Speech Pathologist who all play a vital role in caring for students at all year levels. Warrnambool College has a commitment to zero tolerance of child abuse and safety of children with a disability, from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds and students with diverse sexual and/or gender identification.

Parent Involvement:

The College prioritises communication with all families through a range of mediums including the online communication tool, Compass. Parents and guardians are encouraged to become involved in College activities and the education of their children in all areas of the curriculum. Opportunities exist for parents and guardians to contribute at the policy-making level via our College Council and its various sub-committees.

Education Programs:

In Years 7-10 students are able to participate in studies from all areas of VicCurric and where applicable the Australian Curriculum. At Year 7 there is a common curriculum which aims to develop the students' competence in literacy, numeracy, the arts and technology as a foundation for success in future studies. In Year 8 students continue with the core curriculum, whilst beginning their elective journey in the technology, the arts and languages area.

In Year 9 students participate in PhoenIX which has student centred inquiry-based learning at the heart of this innovative program. At Year 10 students enjoy an extensive program of semester units which provide diversity, challenge and the opportunity to pursue studies of particular individual interest. The VCE timetable aligns with Year 10 units allowing for advanced study if desired. Students are also able to participate in educational extension and enhancement programs in addition to their normal studies. Students interested in vocational education can opt into the VCAL foundation stream, with the opt-in option of VET being included in their timetable.

The College is accredited to teach the SEAL program and is a founding member of the academy of accredited SEAL schools. Students who enter this gifted and talented program must complete testing in Year 6. 

In Years 9 and 10 students are introduced to the broad range of services available from the Careers Centre and they are encouraged to use this facility in planning for future studies or in preparing for entry to the workforce. 

The College also has a select entry Sporting Pathways Program. Students enter this program via an application process and successful completion of peak fitness and physio testing. The SPP program runs from year 7-10.

Student achievement at the VCE and VCAL level is outstanding at Warrnambool College. An extensive range of units are offered from mainstream academic studies through to Vocational Education and Training courses in areas such as Automotive, Building, Community Services, Engineering, Electro technology, Beauty, Plumbing, and Hospitality. 

The College offers the Victorian Certificate of Applied Education at the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior level. Our College recognises the diverse needs and aspirations of senior students and offers a curriculum that maximises their opportunity for entry into further studies, apprenticeships or career paths.

A thorough careers counselling process is a feature of our school¿s program which is aimed at meeting the specific needs of each VCE student. Student success at the VCE level is a major objective of our College.

The School operates numerous specialist academies for students to participate in (sport, drama, music, arts, cooking). These academies train regularly and compete at both local and state level.

Students are encouraged to participate in additional College activities which include sport, instrumental music, Performing Arts, public speaking and debating, academic competitions and student leadership amongst others. Opportunities are provided for students to participate in extension programs which include work experience, camps and international language and cultural tours. The achievements of our students in academic, sporting and cultural endeavours have been widely recognised at local, state and national levels.

Warrnambool College has developed a range of strategies to promote engagement, positive behaviour and respectful relationships for all students in our school. We acknowledge that some students may need extra social, emotional or educational support at school, and that the needs of students will change over time as they grow and learn.

Selection Criteria
  1. Demonstrated capacity to Co-Develop all Strength and Conditioning sessions that align with mentors Victoria Curriculum assessments and complete the tasks as outlined in the job description, located under the "Other Informaiton" tab.
  2. Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values and outlining a capacity to work as part of a team 
  3. Demonstrated commitment to provide high-level delivery of programs, appropriate assessment, treatment and management of students aged 13 to 18.
  4. Demonstrated ability to liaise with staff, students and families providing information regarding the program and resources. As well as providing information on safe and effective use of equipment.
  5. Capacity to be a forward thinking and creative coordinator who is committed to The Warrnambool College Way framework for improving student outcomes.
  6. Demonstrated capacity to reflect critically upon personal professional practice, evaluate and instigate further personal and professional development to continually improve their competence.
Role

Attendance is not required for this position during school holiday breaks.

Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.

Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy.  Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3.  Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility.  Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases.  Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.

This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years.  Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g. therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered.  Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Liaise with and provide information to parents, staff and students about school administration procedures and policy.
  • Provide a document preparation service for the school community.
  • Provide administrative support for specific school programs.
  • Develop and adapt work methods and organise systems of classification.

Other Information

Sporting Pathways Program Strength and Conditioning Coach

The Sporting Pathways program is a collaboration between Exercise and Health Science Faculty at Federation University ¿ Ballarat campus, a range of elite local coaches, local professional physiotherapists, qualified Warrnambool College staff members and the student and parents/carers of Warrnambool.

This position will aim to develop the `whole athlete¿ with advanced cardio enhancement sessions using the latest advances in fitness styles, techniques and equipment. All students involved in the program will complete a minimum three sessions per week in the High Performance Centre which is equipped with sports science equipment enabling all students to have the opportunity to perform the same training that elite athletes such as AFL footballers, Hockeyroos players and A-League soccer players use as a part of their strength and conditioning programs.

Students will also undertake one sport specific training session per week. These sessions will be scheduled before and after school and will be supported by the SPP Coordinator. All sport specific training sessions will be conducted by elite coaches who have been very successful, and in some cases represented their sport at the highest level.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND IMPACT

The Sporting Pathways Strength and Conditioning Coach position has a broader organisation responsibility; guidelines are broad and day to day direction minimal. This role undertakes effective liaison with the general school community, teaching staff, students and families.  There will be a high level of independence and accountability for the delivery of and achievement of objectives at this level.  The role will report through to the SPP Facilitator, and relevant Assistant Principal.

The position is required to work cooperatively and consistently with both internal and external clients and involves close interaction with a range of staff and visitors to the college.

REPORTS TO

This position works closely with the SPP class staff and coaches.  The position will have line management responsibilities to the SPP Facilitator.  The position will be accountable to the Principal.

CLASSIFICATION CONTEXT AND TASK LEVEL

Under routine direction performs structured tasks which require the understanding and application of basic rules and procedures.

·    The minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years

          (or equivalent such as three years plus 12 months¿ work experience).

·    Provide standard professional services independently within defined organisational parameters

·    Provide operational leadership and strategic planning with respect to professional service delivery

·    Influence management and other professional colleagues with respect to strategies

·    Provide complex professional reports requiring in-depth factual analysis, including assessments and

          recommendations for consideration by others

·    Conduct training and instruction to school colleagues within the professional field

·    Provide standard clinical professional services to students within the parameters of school policy and guidelines

          and the standards set by the relevant registration body

·    Explain professional concepts and approaches to clients, stakeholders, colleagues and staff

·    Facilitate individual or group programs for clients

·    Apply sound theoretical knowledge and practical expertise

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS

The Sporting Pathways Program Coordinator is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Co-Development of all Strength and Conditioning sessions that align with mentors Victoria Curriculum assessments
  • Uploading all S&C and Cardio sessions onto the training platform (currently Teambuildr)
  • Support in the delivery of all sessions ¿ SPP mentor and SPP Trainee will also support with the delivery of all sessions
  • Ensure all equipment is set up prior to all sessions and is safely stored away at the completion of the day ¿ SPP Trainee can assist with this task
  • Administration duties including (SPP Trainee will support with all administration tasks);
    • Athlete Agreement returned by all students
    • Medical and Asthma plans returned by all students
    • Planning for before/after school training sessions ¿ this will require consultation with all external coaches and development of Termly planner for all sessions
    • Organisation of events to Federation University ¿ early Term 2 and middle of Term 4
    • All uniform ordering and fitting sessions in consultation with uniform supplier (Indigo Wolf)
    • Attendance at WC Open Night ¿ High Performance Centre Come and Try sessions
    • Attendance at SPP Information Sessions for new graduating Grade 6 students
    • Organisation of Musculo Skeletal screening sessions for new Grade 6 students ¿ end of each year.
  • Attendance at SPP Team Time meetings ¿ twice per term
  • Supervision of SPP Trainee
  • Develop and deliver staff wellbeing sessions ¿ calendar of sessions can be developed based off staff feedback

Other General Administration responsibilities

  • Undertake other duties relevant to the field of responsibility as requested by the Business Manager or Principal
  • Comply with the College¿s policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate the College¿s organisational values on a daily basis
  • Commit to access and equity principles in carrying out work functions
  • Maintain a healthy and safe working environment.
