The Respiratory & Sleep Medicine Physician
-Will provide expert medical assessment and management of inpatients and outpatients who have Respiratory diseases within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
-Will be responsible for the provision of Specialist Respiratory services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients at the relevant hospitals.
-Will ensure provision of high quality services to all patients within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District in keeping with national and international standards
The successful applicant will proactively:
-Support the development of Respiratory Services
-Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
-Champion the needs of Respiratory patients in the community
-Support and develop respiratory research within the department
The position will be primarily located at Wollongong and Shellharbour Hospitals but may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved by the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilities in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).
The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has responsibility for health services in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region – a catchment area extending along the coastline from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south with over 400,000 residents. This catchment covers four Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven. ISLHD operates eight hospital sites in Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Berry, Shoalhaven and Milton Ulladulla, and community health services operating from approximately 58 locations across the region. ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 staff.
Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.
An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wollongong. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 across eight hospital sites and community health services.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with before employment can commence.
All NSW Health Category A workers are required to receive two doses of an approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant. You will be required to provide a record of your vaccination status as part of the recruitment and onboarding process.
Selection Criteria:

  • Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with specialist qualification in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and or/equivalent specialist recognition.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
