The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) leads the Australian Government's efforts to improve cyber security. We are part of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and our role is to help make Australia the most secure place to connect online.
ASD has an ongoing requirement for a Storage Engineer to work in support of various Cyber Defence projects within an integrated workforce.
The Storage Engineer will be responsible for facilitating and supporting the engineering process for data storage in our organisation. They are in charge of creating effective storage strategies with the help of information technology specialists with a strong focus on backup and restore.
Indicative duties include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare and maintain operational procedures for storage and backup management,
- Monitor capacity, performance, availability and other operational metrics,
- Take appropriate action to ensure corrective and proactive maintenance of storage and backup systems to protect and secure business information,
- Create reports and proposals for improvement, and
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of new installations and scheduled maintenance and changes of existing systems.
Key knowledge or experience areas include:
- Highly motivated to seek out areas for improvement,
- Driving continuous service improvement in relation to storage practices,
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, and as part of a larger team,
- Strong security focus, and
- Open to adopting new technologies such as cloud.

The role is Canberra or Melbourne based. Where the selected candidate is Melbourne based they will be expected to travel to Canberra as required. The Agency will consider and negotiate offsite (work from anywhere) working arrangements on a case by case basis for Melbourne based candidates. Where an offsite working arrangement is agreed, successful candidates will be required to: attend the Agency's Canberra Office for the first week of their engagement to undertake compulsory training and to meet team members and various Agency personnel, and travel to Canberra at least once per month for a minimum of 4 working days for key stakeholder, team, and organisational events. FOR INFORMATION: This role requires the successful candidate to complete an Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement. An OSA is an ASD policy requirement (ASD-POL-014) for contractors who will be engaged for a period in excess of 12 months. OSA's are conducted to determine a person's suitability to work in ASD. Essential Criteria
- Experience supporting enterprise class: a) backup software and hardware; b) block storage and Fibre Channel software and hardware, and c) NAS software and hardware
- Experience using the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) to guide operation and design of infrastructure.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with Veeam backup software.
- Experience with VMWare.
- Experience with Disaster Recovery and how it relates to concepts like RTO, RPO, replication, restore.
- Experience with cloud migrations, and integration between cloud and on premise infrastructure.
