About our School: 

St Josephs College Coomera is a Brisbane Catholic Education master planned co-educational College that opened in January 2019. Our first Seniors will graduate in 2024. The College is located in Coomera on the Northern Gold Coast, 40 minutes south of the Brisbane CBD.

About the Role:

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Student Wellbeing Officer to join our St Joseph’s community. The Student Wellbeing Officer is responsible for providing general pastoral care and wellbeing support to students at our College. The Student Wellbeing Officer plays a crucial role in assisting school communities by supporting and being a role model for students, enhancing engagement with the broader community and parents. 

The role will be guided by the specific needs of the school. The Student Wellbeing Officer does not provide counselling and is to work under the direction of the school leadership team and school specialist staff to support Student Wellbeing.
The Student Wellbeing Officer’s focus is on providing effective supports, general strategies and interventions aimed at promoting overall Student Wellbeing


Key Duties/Skills:

   

  • Actively engage in and promote the vision, mission and strategic goals of Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE). Embrace and role model the ethos and charism of the school community through your words, actions, and interactions and participate in school activities, events and celebrations to support and engage with the school community.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and school leaders to understand the specific needs and challenges of students and foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment by promoting respect, empathy and cooperation among students.
  • Model appropriate behaviour and communication skills to provide support and encouragement to assist students to navigate challenges and make positive choices.
  • Support and contribute to the design and implementation of programs that promote social and emotional wellbeing among students.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to identify areas of focus to develop strategies for future student based wellbeing program development including pastoral care and school celebrations.
  • Actively listen to students and create a safe and supportive environment for them to express their concerns or seek assistance. Provide appropriate feedback to students, offering advice and support based on their individual needs and circumstances.
  • Refer students, if necessary, to the appropriate resources or school specialist staff within the school following the approved processes and protocols. Provide available resources and relevant information, as directed, to support student’s personal and emotional wellbeing.
  • Identify and promote the relevant groups and organisations in the wider community that align with the interests and values of the students. Ensure students have access to resources and information to engage with the wider community and participate in school-based activities.
  • Encourage open communication and offer support to assist students to navigate challenges they may encounter during transition periods and provide additional support or referrals that may be required.
  • Create a sense of belonging and involvement among students, parents and community members, fostering relationships and collaborating with school based support staff to encourage and promote student’s participation in community based activities and initiatives.

Qualifications/Eligibility:
  • A commitment to the safeguarding of children and promote a culture where student protection is the responsibility of everyone.
  • A commitment to and understanding of the purpose and mission of the Catholic Church and Catholic schools.
  • Certificate IV qualification in Pastoral Care, Youth Work, equivalent or higher certificate with at least two competencies in mental health, making appropriate referrals, working with young people or cultural awareness and support.
  • Previous experience in a pastoral care or wellbeing role working with children and young people, with preference, in a school context is highly desirable.

To be eligible to be considered for this role you will:

  • hold a Paid Employee Positive Notice Blue Card prior to commencement;
  • be eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the appointment; and
  • have a commitment to and understanding of the ethos and traditions of Catholic Education.
