Job description

Immigration | Immigration Compliance Operations

The branch manages all elements of Operation AEGIS, which is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance of non-citizens with visa conditions that have criminal offences attached.

Led by the ABF - with the assistance of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), State and Territory Police and the Department of Home Affairs - Operation AEGIS enables a range of enforcement activities, including compliance, investigation referrals, removal, and surveillance functions, which are deployed as needed to ensure community safety. Where appropriate, ABF officers refer suspected breaches of visa conditions to the AFP and/or other offences to State and Territory police.

Our ideal candidate

Op AEGIS is looking for confident, self-motivated people who are flexible, resilient, demonstrate professionalism and can exercise good judgement, in undertaking operational activities that are aimed at ensuring the safety of the Australian community. Officers will need to integrate quickly (supported with appropriate training) to work effectively with other agencies in a dynamic, operational environment.

Duties and responsibilities

Regional Compliance and Enforcement

The Regional Compliance and Enforcement (RCE) Section has teams based in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth that work closely together with other policing agencies and internal stakeholders to effectively manage compliance and enforcement activities for individuals whose circumstances legally required their release from immigration detention (the relevant High Court judgement is available at: https://www.hcourt.gov.au/cases/case_s28-2023).

The RCE Section engages directly with visa holders in the field (subject to appropriate risk assessments), to educate them on their visa obligations, apply and remove electronic monitoring devices as required, and undertake operational activity in the event of a breach.

These positions are subject to medical, psychometric and fitness testing.

Investigations and Referral Team

This team identifies breaches of visa conditions that constitute criminal offences under the Migration Act 1958, will intervene and coordinate activity (including with the support of regional ABF officers) to resolve breaches, and may refer matters to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation leading to possible prosecution.

The team maintains awareness of the interactions of certain non-citizens with State and Territory Police and related state-prosecution agencies.

Some of these positions will be subject to medical, psychometric and fitness testing as officers may be required to assist with EMD functions in the ACT.
