About the Opportunity
The Accelerator Operations team at the Australian Synchrotron has a vacancy for an inquisitive and self-motivated person. The Accelerator Operations group is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and development of the particle accelerator systems, and troubleshooting beamlines outside of normal business hours. The group works closely with the Accelerator Physics and Engineering groups to continuously improve the performance and reliability of the accelerators.
Group members work on a variety of projects, technical and non-technical, that support ANSTO's mission. We are a motley bunch that come from a variety of backgrounds.
The operators work a rotating shift schedule, which includes holidays and weekends. The shifts are 12.25 hours long, but the total weekly work hours averages out to 36.75 hours per week over the full rotation of the roster.
About You
This position is ideal for a "tinkerer" - someone who is curious about how complex systems work. You will work collaboratively within the Accelerator Operations team and will be supported to learn how to operate every part of one of the most unique scientific facilities in Australia.
Prior experience with accelerators is not essential, and there will be many opportunities for on-the-job training.

Your Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure the accelerators are prepared, managed, and monitored in accordance with standard operating procedures to support their safe and efficient operation.
Assist beamline scientists and users by troubleshooting beamline equipment.
Assist in identifying faults with the accelerators and provide recommendations for improvement to maintain and improve accelerator performance.
Act as first aid officers, building wardens, and contractor supervisors. Training will be provided for all these roles.
Provide key problem solving and decision making for facility operations outside standard business hours.
Provide training of staff, students, and others in the correct and safe operation of the accelerators.
Manage statistics on system performance and faults that generate the facility's KPIs.
