Tackling Indigenous Smoking Educator (4 positions)

Location: Western Australia - 2 x Derby & 2 x Fitzroy Crossing

Employment Type: Full Time

Remuneration: $66,627.60 - $83,284.50 per annum pro rata + superannuation + salary sacrifice

Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) is a national program that aims to support a reduction in smoking rates amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The TIS Program is contracted to deliver evidence-based health promotional activities across the Derby region. The primary aim of the TIS program is to increase awareness on the health impacts of smoking within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and to support priority groups such as pregnant women or youth, with community led activities and events.

The DAHS TIS team provides:

• Community based health promotional activities and education sessions

• Partnerships with local community organisations, families and Elders

• Support for organisations, workplaces and family homes to become smoke-free and raise awareness surrounding secondhand smoke

• Collection of relevant tobacco use data from community members

• Promotion of tobacco control material via traditional media, social media and virtual reality platforms increase community reach

About You

To be considered for this position, you must have:

• Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) and the issues facing these organisations in their service delivery

• Understanding and appreciation of the Aboriginal culture and the ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal people

• High level of integrity in maintaining confidentiality is a pre-requisite for this position

• Well-developed time management skills

• Proven ability to work under pressure

• Ability to communicate well with people from all walks of life

• Sound computer skills including emailing and ability to use word documents

• Willingness to share with other staff member’s knowledge of the local community that is relevant to client care

• Previous experience as a Liaison Officer, Health Worker or similar

• To identify as a non-smoker

• National Police clearance

• Current “C” Class motor vehicle driver’s license

• First Aid or CPR

• Working with Children’s Check

• Fully Covid-19 Vaccinated

Ideally, in addition to the above, we are looking for someone who:

• Has previous experience working for a Tackling Indigenous Smoking program.

The position involves working within a multicultural organisation where the majority of employees, clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It is required to comply with a number of Service Agreements with Commonwealth and State departments and agencies, and to operate with a number of government and private medical and health delivery organisations. The operating environment for ACCHS Australia-wide - has become increasingly complex and changeable in recent years and this is likely to continue.
