Job description

An opportunity has arisen at Deebing Heights State School for a motivated person to work as a Teacher Aide (Identified), supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in their education: academic, engagement and attendance. This is a temporary position, 26 hours per week (with additional 12.5% for SJM), for the remainder of 2024 with the possibility of extension.As the Teacher Aide you will contribute to the provision of a quality educational service by assisting and supporting teachers with the preparation and enhancement of learning materials and associated activities. You will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in their education. Support activities with the objective of improving learning outcomes of Indigenous students. Provide resourcing for cross cultural awareness training to the broader school community.

Deebing Heights State School is a co-educational State school based on Rawlings Road, in the suburb of Deebing Heights. Our school caters to Prep to Year 6 students. The school vision is Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Learning and Excellence in Partnerships. We teach the Australian Curriculum with a particular emphasis on mastering the basics of literacy and numeracy.

About the Role

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting teachers and students with sporting activities and with school excursions.
  • Communicating effectively and displaying high level of interpersonal skills to function as an effective team member.
  • Development of activities which promote productive partnerships between individual and group members of the community, under the relevant teacher or other staff member responsible for the indigenous portfolio.
  • Maintaining anecdotal records on students for use in reviewing student's development.
  • Displaying confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families.

A mandatory requirement of this role is:

  • In accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000  ( https://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/view/pdf/asmade/act-2019-018 ) a person is prohibited from working in regulated child-related employment unless the person holds a current Working with Children Check clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.
  • For this position, it is a genuine occupational requirement that it be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage

  • For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:
    • of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; or
    • accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.
  • By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.
