About the role

As an Early Childhood Educator, you will ideally possess the capacity to provide a learning environment that is caring, engaging, and differentiated to cater for a range of learning needs, including the specific needs of students who are learning English as an Additional Language.

We are seeking the very best educators in our Remote Teaching Service, working with remote communities to close the gap in life outcomes for our Aboriginal students, their families, and communities. Students in Remote Teaching Service schools need motivated, creative, and resilient teachers who possess a wide range of experience, skills, and capabilities, and are willing to immerse themselves in the school and local community.

The successful applicant should also have a good understanding of, and ability to deliver, the Western Australian Curriculum. An understanding of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is also highly regarded and the ability to apply current evidence-based research to classroom practice. We are seeking teachers who have strong Classroom Management and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) skills to successfully engage students in their learning.

We expect that all of our staff are culturally responsive. The successful applicant will ideally be committed to ongoing self-reflection, expanding your knowledge and improving practices through working collaboratively with your colleagues and the community. We are looking for applicants whose approach will be flexible and adaptive, as you understand the nuances and implications for your teaching, as you get to know your students, their families, and communities.

Ideally, you will have a willingness to get involved in community, school, and social events during, and outside of, regular school hours.

We welcome applications from existing fixed term and permanent teachers, including prospective graduates and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers. Area of qualification of the successful applicant should be complemented by strong literacy and numeracy skills. An interest or experience in English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) will be highly valued.

Our school

Located in the Central Kimberley Region between Broome and Kununurra, most students come from the town of Halls Creek and the communities of Mardiwa Loop and Nicholson Block. A few students commute from several family communities within 20 km of Halls Creek, Koongie Park Station (20 km) and Lamboo Station (40 km).

At Halls Creek DHS, we have developed both a culture of high expectations and a high care environment where success is supported and celebrated. We are striving to be a school of achievement through our consistent teaching practices, dynamic educational experiences, and active community engagement.

Halls Creek DHS has an enrolment of approximately 400 students across the Kindergarten to Year 12 campus, with a 98% Aboriginal enrolment. Located in the beautiful East Kimberley Region, we are part of the Kimberley Schools Project, and are committed to attracting, recruiting, and coaching teachers to master explicit teaching pedagogy.

The location and community

Schools in the Remote Teaching Service are located in some of the most isolated parts of the state. They may be in community settings or small towns, and the majority of students are from local Aboriginal families. They deliver flexible and innovative education programs to ensure students in remote areas have access to high quality learning programs.

Teaching in a remote school offers a range of professional opportunities for teachers who are engaging and resilient. If you are flexible and like working as part of a team, you have the opportunity to be part of this innovative learning community. Skills and interests in literacy, numeracy, and English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) are highly valued.

Teachers who live and work in the remote teaching service tell us that it makes them better teachers, and better people. The Department of Education also supports our teachers by providing a range of additional allowances and benefits.
