North Lake Senior Campus (SC) is seeking to establish a pool of Teacher – English as an Additional Language/Dialect for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

North Lake SC enrols newly arrived migrant and refugee background students aged 16 and over with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. These young people are resilient, motivated, and engaged learners. Through the study of a range of core and elective subjects, students acquire Standard Australian English and the academic skills and knowledge needed for success in Senior Secondary Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and Vocational Education Training (VET) courses. Students also gain an understanding of the Western Australian education system and are supported in planning pathways for future education, training or employment. The majority of students exiting the intensive English Centre (IEC) remain at North Lake Senior Campus to complete studies in Years 11 and 12 courses where Foundation, General and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) EAL/D is offered.

North Lake SC provides students with an alternative approach to Year 11 and 12 schooling. We are one of two senior campuses in Western Australia that offers secondary education to students beyond the compulsory age of 18 years. North Lake SC is a multi-cultural senior campus that promotes an adult ethos. Staff and students work in partnership to develop the language skills required by the students to successfully transition to post school destinations. Suitable applicants should, in addition to having the requisite qualifications, ideally have an appreciation and understanding of student engagement in an adult teaching and learning context. Suitable applicants will be joining an enthusiastic team that is engaged in delivering rich, engaging, and challenging educational programs to a diverse student cohort.

To be successful in this role, you should have a strategic, goal-focussed approach to teaching that engages, supports, and challenges students to be to be active learners and critical thinkers. The ability to work effectively in and across teams is also important. The context of the school will require you to apply effective interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills across the school community as you support your students to be successful. This includes working closely with parents and the community to attain the best educational outcomes for your students.

As part of your regular practice, you should reflect on and assess the effectiveness of your teaching practices and promote an environment of active and positive learning and collaboration. You should provide evidence-based, relevant and engaging educational opportunities to empower students to achieve to the highest of their potential. Creating and promoting an environment which caters for different student learning styles and needs is crucial to the role. Proven ability to engage students using a range of instructional approaches, knowledge of effective classroom management strategies and restorative practices will be also considered favourably.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate your competency against the following domains (that govern the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers):

  • Professional knowledge;
  • Professional practice; and
  • Professional engagement.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • meet the Department of Education Teacher Qualifications and Registration requirements;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
