The opportunity
We are hiring for a Technical Director, Hydropower - Electrical to oversee the delivery of design for major hydropower projects in the Australia and New Zealand region. With a significant workload from ongoing pumped hydropower energy storage projects, and a strong and growing pipeline of future work Mott MacDonald is a trusted consultant for the provision of high-quality technical services in this sector.
In addition to project delivery there is opportunity to engage in business development and build client relationships to enable further growth of our hydropower business. We have already delivered more than 100GW of hydropower and pumped storage across the globe, from technical advisory services, through to Owner's Engineer and Contractor's Designer.
As the senior Electrical engineer in our Hydropower team, your role will be challenging, demanding, varied and offer fantastic opportunities for skill set and career development. Your role's focus includes project management, feasibility works, design, development of specification, construction supervision, and commissioning depending upon project requirements.
Other areas of responsibility:
- Providing technical expertise within electrical engineering in hydropower and energy projects around the globe, specifically with respect to generators, primary plant and secondary systems.
- Working with external stakeholders, ensuring client satisfaction and pursuing and promoting opportunities with potential and established clients.
- Design management within the electrical engineering field and more broadly, including managing to programme, budget and quality requirements.
- Demonstrating technical expertise, providing in depth knowledge and leadership whilst proactively coaching and developing more junior team members.
- The design of electrical engineering works for hydropower and energy projects.

About You
You will be a motivated engineering professional with extensive experience in Pumped Storage and Hydropower projects, with a genuine passion for project delivery and building client relationships. You should have a broad and detailed knowledge of the technical disciplines and considerations that are particular to hydropower and pumped storage projects, as well as demonstrable electrical design delivery experience.
Key to your success in the role will be extensive practical technical experience gained through working on hydropower projects with a consultant, developer, owner, or contractor. You will be highly skilled at electrical engineering design for hydropower, energy and dams projects at concept and detailed design stages.
You'll also need the following:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a Chartered Engineer with professional registration (or ability to obtain)
- Extensive track record in the power industry with hydropower specific experience.
- Experience of working with OEM suppliers including review and integration of their designs.
- Familiarity with the broader disciplines required for hydropower projects and experience with inter-discipline liaison and management of interfaces.
