Our team

As a member of the Positioning Australia Branch you will be at the forefront of developing, operating, and maturing world-class positioning infrastructure across Australia, Antarctica, and the Pacific, as well as undertaking field surveys that directly contribute to improving the accuracy of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame.

The role

Over a decade ago, Geoscience Australia, with investment from AuScope, set out to better understand the dynamics of the Australian plate and improve the accuracy of Australia’s geospatial reference frame. This work has enabled efficiencies across several industry sectors and underpins high calibre research into natural hazards and climate change.

This infrastructure includes:

  • a national network of continuously operating GNSS reference stations.
  • a GNSS antenna calibration facility.
  • a deployable pool of GNSS and geodetic survey equipment.
  • an absolute gravimeter.

As a Technical Officer you may apply technical knowledge to operate and maintain world-class positioning infrastructure, establish processes and workflows to support this infrastructure, and undertake field surveys in remote parts of the country.

In these roles you will:

  • Provide key operational and project support in maintaining geodetic infrastructure across Australia, Antarctica, and the Pacific.
  • Undertake and assist in geodetic field campaigns – including gravity and terrestrial geodetic surveys.
  • Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders to respond to and resolve technical issues promptly.
  • Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation, including work instructions, and technical specifications.
  • Maintain technical expertise in the operation of geodetic and survey instruments; perform configuration and testing of equipment.
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety by adhering to and improving work practices, ensuring fieldwork and operations prioritise the well-being of technical teams and site personnel within WHS frameworks.
  • Contribute to the positive team culture.

  • Demonstrate technical leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills and work effectively to identify, prioritise, solve and communicate issues in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member; communicate effectively within the team to consult, collaborate & inform.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and experiences; confidently present and tailor technical information in both written and oral form to a range of audiences.
  • Support section management and actively contribute to and foster an inclusive culture within the team; Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional manner.

Desired skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

  • Technical background in electronics and communications, or equivalent expertise in operating and maintaining scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience planning and safely undertaking fieldwork in remote areas.
