The Role
The Directorate of Engineering – Army (DENG-A) has an APS 6 Technical, Safety and Risk Policy Officer position available within the Land Materiel Policy team that works directly to the Deputy Director Land Materiel Policy. The key responsibilities of the position are to:
- Review, update and maintain technical, engineering, maintenance, Safety and Risk Policy for land material to ensure completeness and conformance with legislation, regulations, standards, codes of practice and Defence requirements.
- Through adaptive implementation of Army’s Landworthiness framework, identify and undertake continuous improvement activities to enhance assurance of land material.
- Build and sustain relationships with key stakeholders at the working level and engage them on complex, difficult or sensitive issues. Identify, anticipate and accommodate stakeholder needs and expectations.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the team’s strategic, business planning, project, change management and innovation objectives.
- Set individual work priorities while working as part of an integrated team.
About our Team
Directorate of Engineering – Army (DENG-A) supports its Director, and the Technical Regulatory Authority – Land (TRA-L), with the development and maintenance of regulations, policy and guidance for land materiel maintenance and safety, and the provision of monitoring, assurance and advisory activities. DENG-A undertakes outcome-focused regulatory activities that complement land capability requirements, and provides advice and support in relation to the management and governance of Safety and environmental hazards and Risks of land materiel.
Within DENG-A, the Land Materiel Policy team’s main role is management of the Defence Land Materiel Safety Manual (LMSM) which provides regulations, policy and guidance for managing work health and safety risks during the design, manufacture, supply, operation and maintenance of land materiel. The team is the Chief of Army’s advocate for continuous improvement and assurance of land materiel safety.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about ensuring that Defence personnel have access to safe, effective and assured land materiel to complete their mission. We seek a competent professional who is a skilled communicator and team player to be part of an integrated DENG-A workforce responsible for developing, maintaining and assuring the implementation of land materiel safety policy. The ideal candidate will be outcomes focused with strong writing and relationship building skills, and have practical experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Engineering management systems and practices; and/or
- Safety, risk and/or environmental management systems in workplaces; and/or
- Policy development and review, particularly for Work Health and Safety (WHS), risk management or environmental protection. The position requires the candidate to maintain an Australian Government security clearance and to be able to provide personnel information for the last ten years should a security clearance upgrade be required.
