Curtin University invites applications for the role of Technical Operations Coordinator, a key position designed to drive the operational excellence of our Kalgoorlie Campus's technical facilities, supporting Western Australian School of Mines, Minerals Energy and Chemical Engineering (WASM:MECE). This role offers the unique opportunity to lead a team dedicated to supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in the heart of Australia's mining industry.

On top of Curtin’s generous leave entitlements, should you be travelling to Perth, you will also be entitled to 15 hours (2 days) of additional annual leave per annum. You will also be able to make use of Curtin’s TOIL/Flexi-time system that will provide you with flexible arrangements to take added leave.

Your new role
  
As a Technical Operations Coordinator supporting WASM:MECE Kalgoorlie, you will coordinate the day-to-day operational requirements of the laboratory and workshop spaces, supporting primarily Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering activities, ensuring effective space allocation for classes and/or research projects. You’ll provide leadership to the team, fostering and encouraging a positive work environment through the provision of mentoring, training, development, and performance management.
  
You’ll work with and support the Technical Operations Manager (TOM) and Head of School (HOS) with resource and staff planning to ensure adequate skills coverage to meet the area’s operational objectives.
  
You will play an important role in ensuring that occupational health and safety regulations and specific statutory requirements related to the area’s activities are followed. Developing, implementing, and maintaining standard operating procedures for all aspects of the laboratory and workshop operations.
No two days are the same, this is an active and engaging role where you will be able to put your strong problem-solving skills to the test.
  
Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate daily operations in workshops, laboratories and research facilities, optimising space and resources for classes and projects.
  • Lead and mentor a team, enhancing their skills and fostering a collaborative, positive work environment.
  • Uphold and enforce strict safety standards and occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Manage maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures and oversee safety and purpose in the design of new equipment or systems.
  • Engage with key stakeholders including faculty members, students, and external suppliers.
  • Contribute to the planning, design, modification or refurbishment of technical facilities and equipment.
  • Oversee the design and development of equipment or systems or experiment apparatus in regard to safety and purpose.
  • Grant access, coordinate inductions and liaise with Security to allow students into restricted areas.
Who You Are:
  • You hold a relevant degree in Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy or have significant experience and expertise in technical or laboratory management.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with experience managing technical staff and facilities.
  • Strong organisational skills with a knack for timely and efficient task completion.
  • Expert in handling laboratory equipment and safety protocols with a commitment to occupational health and safety.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
