Great Southern Community Legal Services (GSCLS) is seeking a Tenant & Housing Advocate to join our Legal & Advocacy team. This role provides education and advocacy around tenants’ rights for people in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, working to ensure a fairer and more just community.

About Us

Since 1995, Great Southern Community Legal Services have been at the forefront of championing legal rights and providing advocacy services in the Great Southern region. We are deeply committed to fostering a just, fair, and supportive environment. Our vision is to ensure equitable access to legal services for all, particularly the disadvantaged, empowering them to navigate the complexities of the legal system with confidence.

Our mission is clear: to deliver great legal, advocacy, and educational services that address the needs of those facing adversity in our community. Through a holistic approach, we offer advice, representation, and community legal education, while also engaging in advocacy to tackle systemic issues within the justice system. In collaboration with local partners, we strive to break down barriers to justice across our region.

Key Responsibilities

The Tenant & Housing Advocate will:

  • Provide advice to clients on tenancy issues, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with GSCLS colleagues and sector partners to deliver trauma-informed, effective services.
  • Empower clients to self-advocate through offering ongoing support and information.
  • Where needed, advocate for tenants in Courts and to other people.
  • Conduct educational sessions on tenants' rights to improve community awareness and support.

Selection Criteria

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A strong commitment to social justice.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse clientele.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a capacity for collaborative problem-solving.
  • Organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently.

In addition, the following skills and experiences will be highly regarded:

  • Experience in advocacy and/or community services.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act

Days and Hours

The role is a part time position, between 19 and 30 hours per week. The roster for this position is flexible, and will be agreed with the successful candidate after recruitment.
