Developing East Arnhem Limited (DEAL) is an independent not-for-profit organisation established to facilitate investment and economic development opportunities in East Arnhem between Yolŋu Traditional Owners, local organisations and businesses, governments, and investors. Situated in Nhulunbuy DEAL works across the East Arnhem region and is uniquely positioned to drive development and investment opportunities to smooth the transition to a diversified economy that grows and strengthens local jobs and communities, and means people can access services, live safe, and be happy and connected with the world.
East Arnhem is transitioning from dependence on the long-term Rio Tinto operations on the Gove Peninsula, due to end by the end of the decade. This transition will leave a unique infrastructure and economic legacy for East Arnhem that is capable of being leveraged to develop a thriving and sustainable regional economy which creates local jobs for future generations.
The tourism sector is an emerging industry in East Arnhem and identified priority sector to contribute to the economic growth of a diverse and sustainable East Arnhem economy. To help realise the significant potential of the local sector, DEAL is expanding its tourism portfolio to support Yolŋu entrepreneurs and Aboriginal tourism operators in creating enriching tourism experiences. The Role
Based in Nhulunbuy, the Tourism Development Officer will play a key role in shaping the future of tourism in the East Arnhem Land visitor economy through destination marketing and communications, visitor servicing, product development and research. Reporting to the Tourism Development Manager, they will work closely with new and existing tourism operators to provide specialist advice and improve visitor experience, as well as identifying and removing barriers to product development. This hands-on role works side-by-side with Aboriginal tourism operators, providing mentoring and support to deliver authentic and engaging tourism experiences that drive sustainable Tourism Development, making a lasting impact.
The Person
Tourism Specialist: Professional and practical experience in tourism, ideally with an understanding of the Northern Territory and East Arnhem Land tourism industry, hold a current Driver’s Licence and be willing to undertake a National Police Check.
Community Engagement and Mentorship: Experience working with Aboriginal people and local communities to provide specialist advice and build capacity.
Collaborative Communicator: Well-developed written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to a broad range of audiences, and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
Flexible and Adaptable: Willing to travel to remote locations, flexible to work outside standard hours from time to time and are comfortable living in a remote town on Aboriginal land.
Motivated: High personal integrity, self-motivated, and possess strong organisational skills with a passion for cultural tourism and economic development.
