The Highlights

  • Join the Not-For-Profit sector’s Institute of Community Directors team
  • Generous conditions of employment plus 12% superannuation.
  • A new opportunity in 2024 with a progressive and innovative social enterprise!
  • Create new and exciting learning opportunities to support the not-for-profit sector

Use your training skills to create far-reaching social change

Calling all professional trainers – Are you tired of the corporate grind? Would you like to make a difference in the community you live in?

Then we’ve got the job for you!

This position offers a rare opportunity to extend your career in a dynamic and successful social enterprise. You can help us build stronger community organisations through training and education. You can have it all!  Stimulating work, great conditions and a positive impact through your work.

About Our Community

The Our Community Group provides advice, connections, training and easy-to-use tech tools for people and organisations working to build stronger communities.

Our partners in that work are not-for-profit organisations and social enterprises; government, philanthropic and corporate grantmakers; donors and volunteers; enlightened businesses; and other community builders.

Our vision centres on social inclusion and social equity. Our dream is that every Australian should be able to go out their front door and stroll or wheel to a community group that suits their interests, passions and needs - or log on and do the same.

We want to help make it easy for people to join in, learn, celebrate, worship, plant trees, play a game, entertain, and be entertained, care and be cared for, support others and be supported, advocate for rights and celebrate diversity. To get involved. To be valued.

We have an ambitious agenda; we’re not constrained by bureaucracy or boundaries; we’re not interested in internal politics or egos, just in contributing something useful to society. We don't have layers of management, and we don't want someone to be a cog in the wheel of a corporate system. We want you to have plenty of opportunity to make Our Community enterprises your own, and for you to be as excited about their potential as we are.

About the opportunity – Trainer, Learning & Development

We are seeking a full-time, efficient, professional trainer to join our busy Institute of Community Directors Australia (ICDA) team. You will be responsible for writing and developing training materials including:

  • online self-paced courses delivered through our Learning Management system (LMS),
  • resources to support training (i.e. tools and help sheets)
  • face-to-face training sessions

You will also be responsible for delivering face-to-face and online training to our audience, including the Diploma of Governance. We work with the not-for-profit and social enterprise sectors across Australia and cover a range of disciplines, including leadership, finance, governance and fundraising.

You will have shared responsibility for marking assignments, preparing associated reports, and providing trainee support via email and phone.

Your day-to-day tasks will vary a lot, but it's all focused on making not-for-profit organisations more efficient and effective.

You’ll get the opportunity to work in an ethical company with all the excitement and agility of a start-up without the headaches. We’re built on solid foundations, we’re sustainable and successful – but we’ve only just begun. We’re not interested in just keeping things ticking along. We’re builders and we’re on a mission.

About you

You’re a natural facilitator with a strong commitment to education and the community sector. You have highly developed ‘soft skills’: you’re friendly, engaging, articulate and able to take your audience on a learning journey. You are excited by the opportunity to create and deliver new training materials to diverse client groups either F2F, live or in pre-recorded webinars.

You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including high-level interpersonal skills. You will thrive in this busy training environment and feel rewarded when you see the growth in trainee skills and abilities and the benefits they take back to their organisations.

You would describe yourself as a ‘lifelong learner’, excited by the opportunity to enhance your own skills and knowledge and then share that knowledge with others in the sector. Your initiative, problem solving, and judgement skills make you a perfect match to review and assess training materials and trainees of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience.

Of course, your outstanding project planning, time management and organisation skills set you apart from others, you would be described as resourceful and a self-starter, able to juggle multiple projects with innovation and flair. Your strong work ethic and commitment to quality and continuous improvement will enable you to be successful in this unique training role.

As part of the team, you will also be happy to share the delivery of training programs that require travel to rural and interstate locations.

The impact you will have

This is your opportunity to be part of a game-changing agenda. We are impatient for progressive social change, and we aren’t prepared to wait for others to create it. We want to be right at the centre of it. This role offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of your community.

You must also:

  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • Be prepared to undergo a police check.
  • Will be subject to a probationary period of three (3) months.
  • Have a driver’s license and ideally access to a car to travel to and from any training being delivered face-to-face (petrol will be reimbursed by Our Community)

Other relevant information:

We know our strength comes from the diversity of our people and so we want people with different experiences and backgrounds to apply. This is a full-time position, but we recognise the importance of balance and flexibility and understand that it’s not a one size fits all approach, so we’d be delighted to welcome parents returning to the workforce.

Our organisation is one that is as supportive and socially conscious as it is agile and explorative. Our DNA of commercial mind and social heart captures who we are at our core. We have a great working atmosphere with an inclusive, fun work culture. Our team is full of highly collaborative, diverse and highly skilled people. We want you to be a part of a unique environment where everyone contributes. We share our work, and we help each other when needed.

The Trainer, Learning and Development reports to the Training Lead.  When in the office, standard business hours are 9am to 5pm Monday – Friday, and start and finish times are flexible, however, training is often scheduled for evenings (and occasionally on the weekend), and travel is often a requirement of face-to-face training (both interstate and rural – this training may also require overnight stays). Time off in lieu is given as mutually agreed.

To create a better work-life balance, the Our Community Team works a 4-day week (pay for 5 days). We deliver 100% of the work in 80% of the time for 100% of the pay. We have high productivity, reduced stress levels, improved mental health and great team cohesion.

Our Community is located at 552 Victoria Street (corner of Curzon Street and Victoria Street), Wurundjeri Country, North Melbourne. We work in a modern, bright, art-filled, open plan office and operate in a fairly informal manner.

How to apply:

Applications will only be accepted through our online application form (applications received by other means will not be considered).
