Underground Mine Project Manager

Greenbushes Lithium Operation

Residential Full Time Position

About the Role:

Talison Lithium's Greenbushes Lithium Operation (Mine, Site) is looking for an experienced Manager for the Underground Mine Project from studies and design, through approvals, tendering and award of contracts, and into project construction, mine development and, ultimately, operation. The Underground Mine will be planned and constructed as an integrated expansion of the current open pit mine, with support from the geological, mine engineering, mine surveying, mine planning and mine operations teams.

The Underground Mine Project Manager will ensure that all underground mining operations are conducted in a safe, sustainable, economic, and environmentally responsible manner.

Responsibilities include:

Reporting to the Manager - Mining, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide direction and management for the Underground Mine Project studies, planning support of mining, geotechnical, geological, and other Site infrastructure projects ensuring all disciplines are adequately considered and resourced;
  • Manage and progress the Underground Mine Project from studies and design, through approvals, tendering and award of contracts, and into project construction;
  • Work closely with the Mining Department to ensure the Underground Mine is fully integrated with the open pit mining design and activities;
  • Facilitate strategic plans as required;
  • Annually prepare the underground mining operating cost, capital, and human resource Budgets;
  • Manage contract and tender negotiations within the underground mining work areas;
  • Manage and review underground mining contracts and related issues and variations, and approve all mining contractor payments;
  • Select and assist with managing the underground technical staff as required, ensuring that their responsibilities, duties, and needs are defined and met;
  • Develop systems and processes for the Underground Mine to ensure the Mining Department's legal compliance with mining and environmental laws, regulations, licenses and permits relevant to the Site operations;
  • Review Underground Mine construction performance against targets, and investigate any variations to Budget/Forecast; and
  • Conduct other day-to-day mine management tasks.

About the Candidate:

The following qualification/s and competencies are considered necessary for this position:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Mining, Mechanical, Civil); and
  • Qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering or Project Management would be highly regarded.

The incumbent should have the following skills and/or experience:

  • Minimum of 15 years relevant industry experience in an Underground Mine environment with time in a mining management role;
  • Exposure to planning and/or operating an Open Pit mine;
  • Proven ability to manage all phases of Underground Mine Project studies, design, and approvals;
  • Proven ability to manage all aspects of an underground mining construction - safety, health, environment, contractual, technical, development and operational;
  • Understanding of geotechnical design and underground civil construction projects;
  • Technical experience across mining operations such as crushing, screening and ROM management. Knowledge of surface bulk earthworks and mine site civil construction will also be an advantage;
  • Ability to demonstrate effective people management skills;
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret mine safety regulations;
  • Understanding of safety, health, and environmental management systems;
  • Experience in formulating emergency response plans;
  • Experience in leading incident investigations and reporting;
  • Understanding and application of mine economics and the strategic view of the business; and
  • Analytical skills to prepare and manage budgets/forecasts and analyse cost variance.
