About the Role
The Vessel Traffic Service Officer (VTSO) is responsible to promote the safety, efficiency and compliance of all vessels navigating, protect the marine environment and/or the adjacent shore area from possible adverse effects of maritime traffic within Fremantle Port Authority waters. In addition, the VTSO is also responsible for scheduling, coordinating port resources, communication, and continuous visual surveillance of all vessels. The VTSO is the acting liaison between Fremantle Port Authority with vessels, shipping agents, R.A.N and all other port stakeholders throughout their shift.
The VTS centre operates 24/7 and all VTSOs will be on a roster working on 12-hour shifts and/or providing relief coverage to rostered VTSOs.
Key duties include:
- Ensure all required vessel information and documentation have been submitted prior to granting a vessel permission to enter Fremantle Ports.
- Collaborate, schedule, coordinate, and communicate with all port stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient berthing and unberthing of all vessels within the port.
- Understand and effectively use all marine technology and systems such as Dynamic Under Keel Clearance (DUKC), Port Management Information System (PMIS - Voyager), VTMIS, AIS, radar and VHF radios.
Skills & Experience
- Marine qualification and experience (desirable)
- Hold a Vessel Traffic Services Officer (VTSO) Basic Operator Course V103/1 (desirable)
- Hold a GMDSS or Radio Operator’s Certificate of Proficiency (desirable)
If you do not have any of the above,
- Evidence to support that you have undertaken a role as a VTSO for a minimum period of 12 months OR
- Be able to meet the pre-requisites for completing the Vessel Traffic Services Officer (VTSO) Basic Operator Course V103/1 OR
- Be committed to complete the Vessel Traffic Services Officer (VTSO) Basic Operator Course V103/1 as soon as possible.
