About the Role
St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) – the lead health service for the highly regarded Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program (VGMTP) – is looking for an experienced Consultant Geriatrician with expertise in medical education and supervision of Advanced Trainees.
An exciting opportunity to shape the future of specialist state-wide training in Geriatric Medicine, the successful applicant will work alongside the existing Director as Co-Director for an anticipated period of 12 months, before taking on the role exclusively ongoing. Sharing the leadership of a dedicated, dynamic VGMTP team, the Co-Director will provide strategic direction to VGMTP, optimising its performance and building on its reach into non-metropolitan areas and new clinician groups. Reporting to the SVHM Clinical Director of Geriatric Medicine, Home & Community Services, there is also a responsibility to report though to VGMTP’s Advisory Committee which has representation from the Victorian Department of Health, Victorian health services and other professional groups.
Classifications for this position will range depending on experience, according to the Medical Specialists Enterprise Agreement 2022-2026.

Your Contribution
- Respectful, self-motivated individual with a strong strategic focus, excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to program development and improvement
- Full Registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- MBBS (or equivalent) and FRACP in Geriatric Medicine (or equivalent) for at least 5 years
- Demonstrated expertise in medical education and supervision of Geriatric Medicine Advanced Trainees, including project supervision
- Member of ANZSGM (desirable)
- Current National Criminal History check (or willing to obtain)

The Victoria Geriatric Medicine Training Program (VGMTP) is a joint initiative of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine (Victorian Division) and the Victorian Department of Health under its policy of Improving Care for Older People. St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is the lead hospital. The VGMTP office is based at St George’s Health Service in Kew and the Director of VGMTP is a member of the SVHM Department of Geriatric Medicine.
VGMTP runs a state-wide Training Program for specialist trainees in Geriatric Medicine. From 2024 this will include Tasmania. This is supported by local education programs in the three training alliances created through the amalgamation of all accredited Geriatric Medicine specialist training sites in Victoria. Trainees have access to the VGMTP Communication Skills Program. VGMTP collaborates with the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in a centralised match for training in Geriatric Medicine. VGMTP has established internet-based Training Programs for junior doctors, and to a wider audience of health professionals.
VGMTP uses the vehicle of education to enhance the image, understanding, recruitment and training of specialist geriatricians and other health care professionals aimed at improving health care for older people.
