Job description

A pioneer of the Hunter Valley and Australian wine industry, the Tyrrell’s family legacy continues to excel, producing highly-awarded premium wines from some of the oldest vines in the country. Instrumental in establishing Hunter Valley Semillon as one of the world’s iconic and unparalleled wine styles, Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection Vat 1 Semillon remains Australia’s most awarded white wine.

Established in 1858, Tyrrell’s is the oldest and continuously family owned and operated winery in the region and is synonymous with Hunter Valley excellence. The Hunter Valley vineyards are made up of 125 Ha across the region and include vines ranging from 1867 through to new plantings, including an enviable amount of old-vine Shiraz that produces many of Australia’s most sought after and collected red wines.

This is a rare opportunity to establish a career legacy alongside recognised industry leaders and be a custodian of some of Australia’s oldest vines. Reporting to Chris Tyrrell, fifth generation and current leader of the business, this is a senior management position that will be responsible for managing all Hunter Valley vineyard operations. With only 3 Vineyard Managers since 1968, this role is central to the Tyrrell’s wine business, continuing over 160 years of vineyard development.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in viticulture, applied science, agriculture science or equivalent discipline
  • Track record of excellence in high-end viticulture and vineyard management
  • Established vineyard and agribusiness management acumen, including budgets and financial reporting
  • Experience managing a large and multidisciplinary team, in-line with current workplace regulations and practices
  • Understanding and ambition for fine wine culture and brands
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience with dry-grown vineyards preferred
  • Chemical Users Certificate and/or Chemical Accreditation Course
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Organisation and planning skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Proactive & solutions-based approach
  • Capacity for light domestic travel
  • Ability and willingness to undertake manual labour tasks when necessary
