Bird in Hand is a premium Australian winery pursuing the goal of being the pinnacle of wine, food, artistic experiences and design, with vineyards in Woodside and Finniss in South Australia and Seymour in Tasmania.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this unique opportunity will suit an experienced Vineyard Manager with a focus on both the technical aspects of growing high quality produce and building a collaborative and successful team.
You will be responsible for operating and maintaining the property in a safe and profitable manner whilst producing high quality fruit with efficiency and sustainability front of mind.
Predominantly you will work from our Woodside and Finniss vineyards, and oversee the running of the Seymour vineyard from your Woodside base.
Responsiblities
- Responsible for overseeing all aspects of vineyard operations over a total of 80 acres of vineyard.
- Lead a team of six dedicated workers and collaborate closely with winemakers and consultants to ensure the production of premium grapes for our wines.
- Strong understanding of viticulture practices, leadership abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality.
- This is a ‘hands on’ managerial role, you are required to operate vineyard machinery. This includes but is not limited to; Tractor with vineyard implements, sprayer units, grape harvester etc.
- Ensure all vineyard plant and equipment is always maintained and in top working order, including pumps and irrigation lines.
Requirements
- Experience with viticulture with a genuine enthusiasm for wine and viticulture.
- A passion and understanding of the ecosystem and working chemical-free.
- Leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a small, but dedicated team to achieve the high-quality outcomes expected.
- Effective communication skills are imperative to success in this role; the ability to communicate well and foster strong relationships, both internal and external.
- A strong understanding of work health and safety procedures.
- Ability to follow processes, obtain quotes/place orders, utilise apps for irrigation etc. so you do need to have intermediate computer skills and be reasonably tech savvy
- Must have tractor operations experience
- Mechanical ability and understanding are highly desired traits for this role
- A ‘can do, will do’ attitude
- Flexibility, and the ability to work overtime subject to seasonal requirements.
- Valid driver’s and MR truck license.
- Load restraining, chemical handling certification and forklift licence, desirable.
- A pre-employment medical will be required.
