An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Neurosurgery Department at Wollongong Hospital for a Visiting Medical Officer.
This role includes the ability to generate an elective waitlist and run a regular all day elective operating list at Wollongong Hospital. The Neurosurgeon will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). The Neurosurgeon is responsible for the provision of specialist services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients at the relevant Hospital. The Neurosurgeon will ensure provision of high quality services to all patients within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. The Neurosurgeon will proactively:
- Support the development of neurosurgery services
- Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
- Support and develop Neurosurgery research within the department
Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.
An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wollongong. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 across eight hospital sites and community health services.

An eligibility list may be created for future Temporary/Permanent Full-Time and Part-Time positions within the District.

Selection Criteria
1. Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Neurosurgery and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
3. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
4. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
6. Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
8. Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
