  • $68,379.18 per annum plus Superannuation

Waste and Litter Response Officers undertake a variety of tasks and activities in an aim to restore and maintain the amenity of public spaces throughout Hume City Council. As a member of the newly formed Waste Response Team, you will proactively address dumped rubbish and Litter incidents by taping, reporting, and/or removing material with an emphasis on resource recovery. Waste and Litter Response Officers also provide on the spot education to community members on responsible bulk waste disposal methods.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Undertake Waste and Litter collection programs with an emphasis on resource recovery, including:
    • Illegally dumped waste inspection, taping and notification.
    • Dumped Waste and Litter collection (including from roadsides)
    • Public open space and reserves cleaning
    • Shop cleaning.
    • Dead animal and sharps collection
  • Where necessary, assist with the delivery of other tasks and services for the Waste and Sustainability department, including but not limited to, domestic waste, organics, or litter bin collection programs - driving vehicles and emptying bins in accordance with approved programs.
  • Carry out all activities in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies, and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for self, staff, contractors, and the general public.
  • Dispose of Waste and Litter collected at designated landfill and/or resource recovery centre as required, ensuring recyclable material such as e-waste, metals, tyres, refrigerated goods, and batteries, are separated and placed in the correct nominated locations.
  • Undertake safe operation of all types of Waste and Litter collection vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to medium rigid vehicles, truck mounted cranes, and Litter collection equipment.
  • Complete administrative activities relevant to the position, including but not limited to, daily timesheets, running sheets, pre-start checks, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure allocated vehicle is cleaned and disinfected at the completion of each shift.
  • Conduct pre-start checks and perform routine daily maintenance in accordance with approved maintenance programs.
  • Respond to customer enquiries and requests, promptly assisting and providing helpful information.
  • Assist customers to connect with the appropriate staff or department if unable to respond to their enquiry. 

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • A demonstrated understanding of municipal amenity services operations and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, including but not limited to, Heavy Vehicle National Law, Environmental Protection Act 2017, Road Management Act 2004.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and basic maintenance of heavy mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe manual handling principles and procedures, with an ability to identify potentially hazardous materials, such as asbestos.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and work priorities effectively and be flexible to respond to urgent matters.
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and customers with composure, handling complaints effectively whilst presenting a positive and professional Council image.
  • Ability to plan, program and monitor the progress of works and programs including being proficient in maintaining accurate records of works, ideally in an electronic format.

Required Certifications & Qualifications:

  • Current driver’s licence or heavy vehicle truck licence.
  • Certificate II or III in Waste Management (desirable) or substantial knowledge and experience in the field of Waste and Litter collection and disposal operations, resource recovery practices and/or relevant cleansing or maintenance activities.
  • The following licenses and training competencies are advantageous:
    • Asbestos Awareness Training
    • Hazardous Substances and Dangerous Goods Training
    • Manual Handling Training
    • Current First Aid and CPR Certificate
    • Heavy vehicle license
