Job description

Who we are:

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra - we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home —just as we have for over 130 years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About the Role

As a Waterways & Land Officer you will be at the forefront of our efforts to enhance the waterways of the inner west of Melbourne, including catchments and tributaries. • The safe & efficient initiation, maintenance, and delivery of ‘place based’ programs of work and services that contribute to the achievement of catchment, waterway, drainage and land program objectives.
  • The provision of day-to-day relationship interface with customers, traditional owners and agencies, maintaining their confidence in Melbourne Water a provider of catchment, waterway, drainage and land services.
  • Leading collaboration with stakeholders and partners, including traditional owners, to plan and co-deliver initiatives that achieve outcomes in the Regional Catchment Strategy, Healthy Waterways Strategy and Flood Strategy.

About you:

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Ability to adopt an organisation-wide perspective and capability to influence and lead external and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience in waterway, catchment, drainage and land asset management, natural resource management, biodiversity management, waterway planning, rehabilitation practices, and statutory planning processes.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills; seeking all relevant facts, analysing issues from different perspectives, drawing sound conclusions and determining management approaches for a broad range of waterway, catchment, drainage and land management situations.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. An ability to communicate and negotiate clear and effective outcomes with a wide range of people within Melbourne Water, external organisations and with the general public, sometimes in conflict situations.
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiation skills with the ability to facilitate mutually agreed outcomes.
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused, continuous improvement mindset and demonstrated resilience.
  • A graduate qualification in environmental / natural resource management, science, social science or engineering.
  • Be able to swim - as will be working close to water.

Why join us:

At Melbourne Water, we care about water and all life that springs from it.

Our people are fuelled by passion, and with safety at the forefront, we have an unwavering sense of purpose, and are on a mission to protect every Melburnian’s way of life, one drop at a time.

We walk the talk when it comes to flexible working – but that’s not all. Our culture of purpose, safety, results, and learning permeates everything we do. We're dedicated to doing what's right, and this commitment extends to the meaningful work we do in a supportive and inclusive culture that encourages you to make the most of your talents.
