About the opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Scientific Services, you will be responsible for the development, implementation and management of the WHS management system and framework at HMRI, ensuring WHS best practice across the Institute.

The role encompasses development, education, support, facilitation, and communication across all areas of research and operations, to ensure a high standard of workplace safety and compliance to relevant legislation. You will be required to consult and assist all staff including researchers and management to ensure practical implementation of WHS requirements within the facility. 

In addition, the WHS Advisor will be required to collaborate with a range of stakeholders including the University of Newcastle and HNLEHD to establish and maintain a safety culture based on effective training and continuous improvement.

Key Requirements

  • Proven ability in developing, implementing and monitoring of a WHSMS, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines

  • Strong knowledge of current WHS legislation, Codes of Practice and Australian Standards and demonstrated ability to keep abreast of changes and updates

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement with proven experience in proactively engaging, negotiating and collaborating with a range of key partners

  • Proven experience investigating and appropriately managing hazards and incidents as well as performing risk assessments

  • Participating in and helping to lead HMRI’s health and wellbeing program

  • Effective writing skills with experience preparing reports at Executive and Board level

  • Experience in presenting and managing training and induction processes and programs, both online and in person

  • Previous experience within a laboratory, science or research organisation highly desirable

  • A tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety (or equivalent) is desired.

The position is based on 0.8 full time equivalent and can be performed across 4 or 5 days per week.
