HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage. 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Youth Counsellor to join the headspace team! The position is full time, working Monday to Friday.

About the Opportunity 

The Youth Counsellor, based at headspace Esperance, provides evidence-based short-term individual and group interventions to young people and their families and friends, guided by the staging model for early intervention youth mental health services. 

The Youth Counsellor will undertake mental health assessments and develop care plans in conjunction with the young person and identified family, friends and other professionals 

Requirements of the Role: 

  • Provide short-term evidence based individual and group interventions and care co-ordination to young people with mild to moderate mental health issues. Interventions will include identified family, friends and workers as directed by the young person and best-practice principles. 
  • Provide psycho-social initial assessments using the agreed headspace tools, or similar, to determine young people suitability for ongoing headspace services. 
  • Develop, review, and close care plans in partnership with young people, their family and friends. 
  • Assess, monitor, and manage clinical risk in consultation with the Clinical Lead and Senior Youth Mental Health Clinician. 
  • Work in the intake role, responding to service enquiries, screening new referrals, and booking in initial appointments. 

About you:

  • Completion of specific medical training (either at a graduate or post-graduate level) and full registration to practice from the peak professional body (e.g., general practitioners, paediatricians and dieticians).  

OR 

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers who are registered with AHPRA  

OR 

  • Mental Health Counsellors or Psychotherapists whose skills, training and experience are equivalent to the requirements outlined within the Australian Counselling Association Scope of Practice Guidelines at a minimum Level 3 or above within those guidelines, and who are registered with the relevant membership body (ACA or PACFA or equivalent)  

OR 

  • Specialist postgraduate qualifications in relevant mental health clinical fields (e.g., Masters of Family Therapy, Masters of Addictive Behaviours). 
  • Demonstrated experience in working clinically with young people with mild to moderate mental health issues and alcohol and other drug issues within a short-term intervention program. 
  • Proven ability work with mixed modality of therapeutic approaches. 
  • The ability to engage and work effectively with vulnerable young people and their families, including those who may exhibit challenging behaviours. 
  • A demonstrated understanding of the issues facing young people and accessing services. 
  • The ability to make timely, sound decisions and assessments regarding required interventions and referral pathways. 
  • Experience working within the mental health service system and knowledge of mental health issues, impacts and navigation of the service system. 
  • High level of oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with young people, family and friends, Primary Health Professions, and other health professionals. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team. 
  • Excellent written, analytical and verbal communication skills. 
  • Sound administration, client record, file management and IT skills. 

Desirable Criteria: 

  • Experience working with the following priority groups: Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and gender diverse young people and their families 
  • Understanding of the Australian health care system, key issues in primary health care, the mental health service system, including the range of professionals that work within, or encounter, the mental health sector. 

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Working With Children card, Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, and suitable work referees.
