About the role

We are looking for people who want to make a positive difference to young people who have offended, to improve their education and work skills, maintain family links and prepare them for reintegration into the community.  The role considerably influences services that ensure young people are provided opportunities to address their offending behaviour.

The Youth Custodial Officer is responsible for the management and positive engagement with young people detained at Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale, Western Australia.

Youth Custodial Officers are employed under the Department of Justice (Youth Custodial Officers) CSA Agreement 2022 and receive all the benefits attached to a government career:

  • competitive base salary: $79,156 – $84,977 plus super
  • 19% commuted shift allowance in addition to the base salary upon commencement of shift work, equating to approximately $15,000 per annum

About you

Do you have resilience, maturity, compassion and empathy?  As part of a supportive team you will work alongside young people in challenging situations. Your ability to diffuse and manage conflict is essential.

Be a positive role model and work with young people and their families who have often experienced significant trauma. You will implement the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (please see information booklet) into everything you do to ensure young people are safe and encouraged to lead law-abiding, productive lives in a culturally supportive way.

A Youth Custodial Officer based at Banksia Hill Detention Centre is required to work rotating shift patterns on a 24 hour per day / 7 days per week roster system. Shifts are ordinarily 12 hours in duration and you will be expected to work on public holidays (including Easter, Christmas and New Year), weekends and nights as part of the roster rotation.

Eligibility requirements

What else do you need:

  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency, or New Zealand citizenship
  • A current unrestricted C class drivers licence (Automatic is accepted)
  • Applicants must be able to successfully apply for a Working with Children Check or have a current Working with Children Check to be eligible for appointment to this position

All employees are required to undergo employment screening, which includes a National Criminal History Check and other checks that may be relevant to the position requirements.
