An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join our Zoo Veterinary team in a Full-Time capacity as a Zoo Veterinary Nurse!

At Australia Zoo, the Zoo Vet team work closely with the Keeper Management team and the Wildlife Hospital team to ensure the daily operations of Australia Zoo Animal Care are maintained to a gold standard of care.

The successful candidate must be able to function in a dynamic environment with constantly changing priorities consistent with emergency work. Animal welfare is a priority and responsibility for personal safety when working with wild animals is critical. Customer service is an important part of the position with a need to communicate positively with the public, the media, VIPs and other staff to promote conservation and education.

Duties May Include –

  • Maintaining the highest standard of animal welfare
  • Assisting Veterinarians in day-to-day procedures, including anaesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and emergency treatments
  • Compliance with all relevant legislation including the Nature Conservation Act, the Animal Welfare Act, COP for Wildlife in QLD and Queensland Health Regulations
  • Carry out in hour laboratory testing
  • Maintaining stock levels
  • Answering email and phone enquiries concerning veterinary subjects
  • Keep up to date with all areas of veterinary medicine and care, including maintaining continuous education
  • Commitment to Australia Zoo Group policies and procedures
  • Ensure company ethics and professional standards are adhered to at all times
  • Maintain Australia Zoo’s customer service standards
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety Procedures
  • Attend meetings as requested by Zoo Veterinarians, Keeper Management and Senior Management

Essential Criteria –

  • Certificate IV or higher in Veterinary Nursing
  • Extensive experience working as a clinical Veterinary Nurse in a Zoo or similar environment, including anaesthetic and surgical nursing experience with a variety of large and small animal species
  • Sound knowledge and competency in all aspects of veterinary nursing including but not limited to, first aid and emergency medicine, sampling techniques, in-house laboratory testing, drug calculations and administration techniques
  • Extensive husbandry experience in a hospital environment for a wide variety of wildlife species, including enclosure set up, animal enrichment and diet transitions
  • Have or be eligible to obtain a licence to use radiation sources (diagnostic veterinary radiography) from Queensland Health
  • Have relevant vaccinations for working in the industry (Tetanus, Lyssavirus, QFever) unless otherwise exempt
  • A high level of interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and communicate effectively and positively with all staff and zoo visitors
  • Self-motivation, initiative and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and evidence-based decision making
  • Computer literacy including the Microsoft suite
  • Well developed organisational and time management skills & the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Flexibility with days/hours of work (including weekends, public holidays and school holidays)
  • Excellent presentation
  • Open driver’s licence

  • Any other relevant Certificates or Qualifications
  • Current First Aid qualifications
