Job description

Barwon Doctors

About Alice Springs

Alice Springs Hospital in the Northern Territory of Australia is the home of true general medicine with a broad case-mix and incredibly interesting clinical work. It includes a strong exposure to rural and remote medicine. We are an established and growing health research hub. First Nations Australians make up about 85% of our inpatients – working with patients who make up one of the oldest continuing living cultures in the world is an incredible experience.

Alice Springs Hospital is a 183-bed Level 2 teaching hospital affiliated with Flinders University and Charles Darwin University. We work closely with Tennant Creek Hospital and Royal Darwin Hospital in the Northern Territory, and have strong links to Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia as tertiary referral centres, and visiting specialists from these hospitals.

Alice is a unique place to live with a close connection to the outback. It is bicycle-friendly - rarely taking more than 10 minutes to get anywhere. Out of town you can camp under the stars, swim through gorges, explore rocky mountain ranges and hit world-class mountain bike trails.

About the Role

Looking for somewhere challenging and rewarding... somewhere fundamentally different? Alice Springs Hospital is seeking two Infectious Diseases Registrars for 6 months each or 1 for a full year to join the Department of Medicine.

The RACP accredited ID Advanced Trainee position is seconded from Barwon Health, Victoria and supported by a busy Infectious Diseases unit, with three consultant positions as well as experienced Infectious Diseases Specialists who visit regularly from Barwon Health. The role provides a consulting inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases Service to the vast Central Australian region, as well as supporting the Infection Control, Hospital in the Home and Antimicrobial Stewardship programs within the hospital and the Centre for Disease Control Unit in Alice Springs. There are opportunities to participate in remote outreach clinics across the region.

First Nations Australians in Central Australia experience some of the highest rates of blood stream infections, bronchiectasis, rheumatic fever and HTLV-1 infection worldwide, providing an extraordinary opportunity for health improvement. Alice Springs Hospital sees a disproportionately high number of interesting Infectious Diseases cases. The role includes teaching of general Medical Registrars along with other junior doctors and medical students. There is considerable scope for research, and, if desired, the successful candidate will be able to take advantage of an established research infrastructures on campus, including Flinders University, Centre for Remote Health and Poche Centre, as well as through the connections to Barwon health.

Successful candidates will be supported in their relocation to Alice Springs and provided with on-site accommodation for the duration of their secondment. The Hospital has a busy social calendar with opportunities to make new friends and explore this beautiful region.
