In keeping with Barwon Health's values the culture in our ICU is one of respect compassion and commitment to our consumers, their loved ones and all of our staff. Our unit fosters dedication to these values in our everyday encounters within our clinical roles but also within our non-clinical unit activities and meetings. We believe that these values are a core part of delivering the highest quality care to our patients and achieving the best possible patient centred outcomes. We also promote the importance of respectful collaboration with other teams involved in patient care within the ICU. This team spirit is reinforced daily through our multidisciplinary patient management meeting.

We offer a highly supportive clinical training environment to trainees at all levels and understand the importance of this environment in achieving career progression and achieving training goals. Regular meetings with supervisors for 2 way feedback across all levels of trainee is encouraged. Trainee satisfaction is very important to us and our success in this area is evident by the return of previous junior trainees in more senior and specialist roles.

About the Role - Intensive Care Unit Senior Registrar

University Hospital Geelong ICU is a C24 CICM accredited 24 bed level 3 adult medical, surgical and cardiothoracic ICU servicing the Greater Geelong and South Western Victoria region. We have a well established reputation in delivering complex high quality patient care in a supportive and collaborative environment. UHG ICU has AP6 accreditation with more than 100 Paediatric cases per year and we have close clinical and trainee relationships with our state C24 PICU.

The clinical component of the Senior Registrar position includes leading daily ward rounds, directing patient management, supervising junior medical staff and over seeing their duties, liaising with other specialty services and developing advanced procedural skills under the direction of the supervising Intensivists. Experience in providing first on call cover to the ICU after hours under the supervision of an immediately available Intensivist is included in the role. Our Senior Registrars are expected to assist with the coordination and delivery of the weekly junior medical staff education programs. This includes CICM examination preparation, monthly echocardiography teaching and journal club. Coordination and oversight of other regular unit meetings, audits and activities is also part of the role.

We offer protected Consultant supervised teaching weekly. The education program incorporates core ICU topics, CICM examination preparation and multidisciplinary simulation training in the Deakin University ReVISE simulation unit. We have weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings and monthly Safety and Quality and Journal Club meetings. We also provide monthly teaching in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. There is a very well established research team with participation in national and multinational trials and we have assisted many CICM trainees with completion of their formal projects.

Barwon Health is a Tier 2 ECMO site with the Victorian ECMO Service. Opportunities in the area of ECMO include exposure to patients receiving VA and VV ECMO and ECPR. Our ECMO education program includes local education program delivery and ECMO simulation scenarios.

We have a strong track record in the areas of Positive Culture, Patient Centred Care and Collaborative Communication. All our trainees undertake the iValidate program (Identifying Values, Listening and Advising High Risk patients in Acute Care) which focuses on difficult communication scenarios and end of life care.

If you have the qualifications and aptitude along with excellent interpersonal skills and the commitment to improving patient care, this may be the role for you!
