About the Role
The Neonatal Fellow will work in the Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) and Special Care Unit (SCN) of Monash Newborn and in the birthing suites and postnatal wards at Monash Medical Centre. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective person centred care and may undertake training towards attaining Fellowship of the relevant college. The position is designed to provide the Fellow with an in-depth training in the management of a wide range of medical and surgical clinical issues in the newborn infant in a large complex multi-disciplinary health service environment while supported by Senior Medical Staff at all times.
The role includes:
Undertake advanced Neonatal clinical procedures (in line with approved scope of practice);
Participate in outpatient clinics
Active follow up role for patients
Patient assessment and management in consultation with the Neonatologist attending that area
Patient care coordination including the liaison with visiting specialists and members of the paediatric surgical team, and the management of patients under the care of their team
Attendance at high-risk deliveries
Family member communication, feedback and liaison
Provide leadership to the team of junior staff
Promote the highest standards of care through supervision and teaching of Junior Staff
Extensive interaction with the other health professionals, especially, the nursing and allied health staff
Ensure effective communication between all members of the nursing and medical team
Interaction with and teaching of Students
Active participation in all aspects of the Academic Program of Monash Newborn including presentation at Joint Meetings and Grand Rounds
Involvement with research is strongly encouraged and the experienced and enthusiastic support of the Senior Medical Staff will be given for the planning, conducting and reporting of their work
Play an active part in quality improvement activities
Contribute to the continuing development of Monash Newborn as a leading centre for neonatal care
Self-management (including time management, accessing education and training and completing college requirements)
Provide clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary treating team
Demonstrate commitment towards key organisational initiatives
Demonstrate compliance with all relevant Monash Health Policies and Procedures
About Monash Newborn
Monash Newborn provides neonatal services to support over 9,000 births a year and is responsible for the provision of neonatal services for Monash Health within the Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton, Dandenong and Casey Hospitals & Sandringham Maternity services, functioning together as a single integrated service with a hierarchy of complexity. About 4,500 babies are born each year at Clayton to a selected high-risk maternity population, while lower risk mothers are managed at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals, which have about 2,500 births at each site each year respectively.
The neonatal nursery in Monash Children’s Hospital has a combined neonatal intensive care and special care capacity of 64 cots. Supported by a comprehensive range of paediatric specialty services at Monash Children’s, the neonatal service is able to provide the full range of medical and surgical care of the newborn with the exception only of ECMO and cardiac surgery. The volume and breadth of the service offers outstanding opportunities for clinical training and research.
About You:
To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:
You will be keen to consolidate and progress your training and skills in the advanced care of the newborn infant and their families.
You will have the appropriate level of clinical knowledge and training to progress and thrive in the central, complex role of Neonatal Clinical Fellow/Senior Registrar in a busy neonatal intensive care unit.
Mandatory requirements of the role:
A medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) which is recognised for registration by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
Advanced Trainee of the relevant Medical College in Neonatal Paediatrics
At least 12 months of Level 3/Level 6 neonatal Intensive Care experience
